Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Q2 FY2026: Commitments Mount

AMD's Q2 FY2026 filing shows $30.3 billion of unconditional purchase commitments against $13.1 billion of cash and short-term investments. Of those commitments, $17.4 billion falls due in the remainder of FY2026, making the near-term payment schedule central to the funding question. Operating cash generation is improving as its artificial-intelligence (AI) business expands, but so are its future payments. The comparison is not itself a funding shortfall: AMD will continue collecting customer payments and also has access to borrowing. For a semiconductor designer, the investment question now extends beyond chip sales to the infrastructure supporting them. Q2 10-Q, Notes 9–10 and liquidity discussion

Throughout this analysis, M means million, B means billion, FY means fiscal year, and H1 means the first six months. Amounts are in U.S. dollars. Changes, margins, combined balances and other ratios are calculated from the cited filings unless attributed to management.

1. Future obligations outweigh the modest bond balance

AMD's financial obligations extend well beyond its $3.25B of bond principal—the amount borrowed before interest.

1-1. Investments rose as cash fell and construction expanded

Read cash together with short-term investments; the decline in the cash account alone does not mean combined liquid resources fell. Together, these balances increased from $10,552M to $13,111M.

Item ($M)Dec. 27, 2025June 27, 2026Change
Cash and equivalents5,5395,086−8.2%

Property and equipment, net2,3123,439+48.7%
Acquisition-related intangibles, net16,70515,635−6.4%

Receivables—sales for which customers have not yet paid—increased with sales, according to management. Inventory growth came mainly from unfinished products: work in process rose from $4,768M to $5,265M. Construction in progress increased from $508M to $1,148M, indicating spending on assets still being prepared for use. Acquired intangible assets, such as technology and customer relationships, declined as their cost was charged against earnings over time. Q2 10-Q, balance sheet, Note 3 and cash discussion

1-2. Unpaid bills grew alongside the expansion

Bond principal stayed at $3,250M, while accounts payable and accrued liabilities together rose from a calculated $8,179M to $10,905M. These operating obligations include unpaid supplier bills and expenses already incurred. Of bond principal, 46.2% matures within three years: ($875M + $625M) / $3,250M. The average contractual interest rate, weighted by each bond's principal, is 3.8%. The existing balance sheet includes lease assets and obligations, but contracts for leases that have not started create additional future claims on cash.

AMD also had a $5.0B revolving credit facility with no outstanding borrowings at quarter-end—a lending arrangement it can draw on, repay and reuse, subject to its terms. This provides a funding option, although drawing it would add debt rather than generate operating cash. Q2 10-Q, balance sheet and Notes 9–10

1-3. Retained earnings fell because treasury shares were retired

Retained earnings—accumulated profits kept in the business—declined from $6,699M to $5,909M despite $3,680M of first-half profit. Retiring previously repurchased shares reduced this account by $4,470M; that accounting transfer was not a new cash outflow.

Additional paid-in capital, the equity account recording amounts contributed above shares' nominal value, fell from $63,365M to $61,373M. The treasury-stock deduction for repurchased shares disappeared, while accumulated other comprehensive losses—certain gains and losses recorded outside net income—increased from $3M to $74M. Total equity nevertheless rose from $62,999M to $67,224M. Total assets of $84,464M equal calculated liabilities of $17,240M plus that equity. Q2 10-Q, balance sheet, statements of equity and Note 12

2. The operating recovery is real, but last year's base was damaged

AMD earned substantially more from operations, although export restrictions depressed the comparison period.

2-1. Profit improved beyond the absence of last year's inventory charge

The operating-profit row separates the business recovery from investment gains and tax effects below it. The figures follow U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the accounting rules used in AMD's financial statements. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) spreads profit across the average share count, including potential additional shares required by accounting rules.

GAAP measure ($M, except margins and EPS)Q2 FY2025Q2 FY2026
Revenue7,68511,536
Operating profit/(loss)−1341,990
Operating margin−1.7%17.3%
Net income8722,297
Net margin11.3%19.9%
Diluted EPS ($)0.541.38
Diluted weighted-average shares (millions)1,6301,659

Operating margin is the portion of sales left after operating costs: −$134M / $7,685M became $1,990M / $11,536M. Net margin measures the portion remaining after taxes and other items as well.

Removing only the approximately $800M inventory and related charge tied to export restrictions on MI308 data-center AI chips gives an illustrative prior-year operating profit of approximately $666M. Against that adjusted comparison, which is not a reported GAAP result, current operating profit grew about 198.8%, versus revenue growth of 50.1%. This calculation retains stock compensation and acquisition amortization—the gradual charging of acquired intangible assets against profit. It does not establish a recurring earnings forecast. Q2 statements; FY2025 10-K, export controls discussion; AMD Q2 earnings release

Other income rose from $98M to $598M, mainly because investments gained value when previously private companies became publicly traded. These gains are not chip-sale profits or equivalent cash receipts. Meanwhile, the prior-year $834M tax benefit became a $252M tax expense. The earlier benefit included a substantial nonrecurring item: after the U.S. Internal Revenue Service approved tax relief, AMD released amounts previously set aside for uncertain tax liabilities. That release boosted prior-year net income without improving chip-sale profitability. Q2 10-Q, statements, Note 13 and operating discussion; AMD Q2 earnings release, tax reconciliation note

Diluted EPS reflects net income divided by diluted shares; the table presents AMD's reported EPS, which may not be reproduced exactly from figures rounded to millions. The larger share count restrained EPS growth despite buybacks. Q2 10-Q, statements and Note 11

2-2. Faster sales absorbed development spending, but not in every business

Research and development costs rose from $1,894M to $2,528M, primarily from additional employees. Their share of sales fell from 24.6% to 21.9%, calculated using the revenue figures above. The filing does not provide a reliable split between costs that remain relatively stable and those that vary with sales. Using the charge-adjusted comparison above, operating-profit growth was roughly four times revenue growth. This historical relationship is not a forecast of how costs will behave. Q2 10-Q, expenses discussion

The segment table shows why stronger group earnings do not imply improvement everywhere.

Segment ($M)Q2 FY2025 revenueQ2 FY2026 revenueQ2 FY2025 operating profit/(loss)Q2 FY2026 operating profit
Data Center3,2406,718−1552,103
Client and Gaming3,6213,841767582
Embedded824977275386

These profits exclude costs AMD does not assign to individual segments, including stock compensation and acquisition amortization: $2,103M + $582M + $386M − $1,081M of unallocated costs equals $1,990M of consolidated operating profit. Data Center now supplies 58.2% of revenue, calculated as $6,718M / $11,536M. Client and Gaming profit fell as operating expenses increased. Q2 10-Q, Note 4 and segment discussion

3. Cash generation improved with help from unpaid bills

Operating cash generation strengthened, but supplier payment timing supported the result.

The continuing-operations row removes cash generated by the manufacturing business AMD subsequently sold.

Cash measure ($M)H1 FY2025H1 FY2026Change ($M)

Free cash flow, continuing operations, calculated1,9074,124+2,217

Free cash flow here means operating cash less equipment and property purchases: $5,321M − $1,197M, versus $2,401M − $494M. It measures cash left after those purchases, before items such as acquisitions and buybacks. Supplier payables added $2,170M to current-period operating cash, compared with $547M previously. Receivables, inventory and prepaid/other assets absorbed $966M, $548M and $991M, respectively. The filing attributes the payable increase primarily to payment timing, so this support may reverse when bills are paid. Q2 10-Q, cash statements and liquidity discussion

Capital spending reached 5.5% of first-half sales ($1,197M / $21,789M); spending to maintain existing assets and spending to expand are not separately disclosed. Buybacks consumed $221M, employee-share tax withholding $341M, and new borrowing contributed nothing. Stock compensation added back to operating cash was $990M, or 4.5% of first-half revenue. This expense does not require an immediate cash payment, but additional shares can reduce existing shareholders' ownership percentage. Q2 10-Q, cash statements and Note 12

4. AI strength sits beside cyclical weakness and contractual exposure

The business is expanding, but its markets are moving at different speeds.

The annual record places the latest operating margin above its recent average without treating a strong quarter as a permanent level.

Consolidated measure ($M, except ratios)FY2021FY2022FY2023FY2024FY2025

The five-year arithmetic average operating margin was 9.5%; the period's low was 1.8% in FY2023. Acquisitions and related amortization limit direct comparisons across this history. Three-year annualized growth from FY2022 to FY2025 was 13.6% for revenue, 43.0% for operating profit and 48.6% for net income, using (ending value / starting value)^(1/3) − 1. These rates describe the constant yearly growth that would connect the starting and ending figures.

FY2025 continuing-operations cash conversion was lower than the total ratio: $6,493M / $4,269M = 1.52×. In other words, continuing operations generated about $1.52 of operating cash per dollar of their net income. FY2023 10-K, statements, pp. 54–58; FY2025 10-K, statements, pp. 58–62

Within the current recovery, quarterly client processor shipments increased 34% from a year earlier, but average selling prices fell 6%. Gaming revenue declined from $1,122M to $779M. Inventory of $8,468M includes $5,265M still in production, making conversion into saleable products an important execution measure. These signals describe an AI-led expansion, not a uniform semiconductor upturn. Q2 10-Q, Note 3 and segment discussion

Unconditional commitments increased a calculated 148.9%, from $12,166M at fiscal year-end to $30,276M, including $17,386M due in the rest of FY2026. They cover components, cloud capacity, software and technology licenses; some cloud obligations can shrink if providers reduce or reassign capacity. These are future contractual purchases, not all currently recognized debt. FY2025 10-K, Note 12; Q2 10-Q, Note 10

Additional exposure includes $4.5B of leases not yet started and $4.1B of maximum partner-lease guarantees, which typically become payable if a partner defaults. After quarter-end, AMD signed $9.5B of further leases and up to $5.0B of conditional investment commitments. Their different triggers and schedules prevent treating their sum as immediately payable debt. Management says reasonably possible litigation losses are not expected to be material. Q2 10-Q, Notes 8 and 10

AMD's July Helios announcement, introducing integrated AI computing systems, highlights the commercial opportunity behind the expansion. However, the OpenAI and Meta warrants—conditional rights to buy shares—each permit purchases of up to 160M AMD shares if specified conditions are satisfied. None had vested at quarter-end, meaning the conditions for earning those rights had not been met. Future customer purchases, together with the other required conditions, could make the warrants exercisable. If exercised for newly issued shares, they would reduce existing shareholders' percentage ownership alongside the associated revenue opportunity. AMD product announcement; Q2 10-Q, Note 12

5. Customer cash must catch up with the commitments

AMD's next test is converting its AI expansion into cash after paying suppliers and funding infrastructure. Data Center growth and recovering margins support that effort, while weaker gaming demand and conditional customer incentives complicate it. Capital allocation currently favors capacity and strategic investments over buybacks. If customer purchases arrive on schedule and supplier credit remains manageable, operating cash can support more of the expansion; delays would place greater demands on existing liquidity or borrowing.
