Progressive Corporation (PGR) Q2 FY2026: Net Premiums $21.6B, Net Income $3.3B, Policies Cross 40M

Progressive Corporation posted Q2 net premiums earned of $21,573 million and net income of $3,311 million, up 6.2% and 4.3% year-over-year, respectively. Policies in force reached 40.09 million as of June 30, up 7.4% from 37.32 million a year earlier — the first time in the company's history the figure has surpassed 40 million. The combined ratio, as reported by the company, was 87.3%, deteriorating 1.1 percentage points from 86.2% a year ago; first-half favorable prior-year reserve development of $1,002 million cushioned earnings. First-half net income was $6,129 million, up 6.7%, with diluted EPS rising 7.2% to $10.47 from $9.77 a year earlier.

Market reaction diverged sharply from the headline numbers. Despite the earnings beat, the stock fell approximately 9% in pre-market trading following the announcement (per Investing.com earnings call records). As discussed in section ⑥ below, slowing policy growth was cited as the driver.

The available-for-sale fixed-maturity portfolio expanded by approximately $7.6 billion (+9.1%), reflecting active duration management.
