EcoPro BM, Soulbrain and Aekyung Chemical Form Korea's First Integrated Sodium-Ion Alliance — Targeting CATL's USD 8.6B Market

TL;DR - EcoPro BM (247540.KQ), Soulbrain (036830.KQ) and Aekyung Chemical signed the K-Sodium Alliance MOU on July 26, pooling cathode, electrolyte and hard-carbon anode know-how into a single integrated sodium-ion battery (SIB) material stack. - The alliance aims to offer global automakers and battery manufacturers a bundled "package solution," directly challenging China's CATL, which recently secured a 60 GWh SIB supply deal — the world's largest. - The global SIB market is projected to grow from USD 1.26 billion (2025) to USD 8.64 billion by 2035 (~14% CAGR), with MIT Technology Review naming sodium-ion one of the 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2026.

Part A — What Was Announced

The K-Sodium Alliance

On July 26, 2026, EcoPro BM, Soulbrain, and Aekyung Chemical signed a memorandum of understanding at EcoPro BM's headquarters in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province, establishing the K-Sodium Alliance. It is South Korea's first collaboration to integrate all three core SIB material layers under a single cooperative framework.

Each company contributes a distinct segment of the sodium-ion cell:

CompanyTickerRole
EcoPro BM247540.KQCathode materials; overall project coordination; existing SIB pilot line
Soulbrain036830.KQElectrolyte and additive technology
Aekyung ChemicalUnlistedHard carbon anode; mass-production process R&D

Under the MOU, the three firms will share prototype materials and evaluation data, jointly optimize cell-level performance, and co-market to battery manufacturers and global OEMs as a single vendor.

Why Sodium-Ion?

Sodium-ion batteries substitute abundant sodium for lithium. Versus lithium iron phosphate (LFP) — the dominant Chinese budget chemistry — SIBs offer:

  • Lower raw-material cost: estimated USD 50-80/kWh in 2026 versus USD 80-120 for standard lithium-ion packs, a 30-50% material cost advantage
  • Superior low-temperature stability: operable from -40 degrees C to +70 degrees C
  • No cobalt or lithium dependency: reduces exposure to geopolitically constrained supply chains
  • Long cycle life: suited to stationary energy storage systems (ESS)

EcoPro BM's leadership noted that Korea's domestic SIB material ecosystem remains "underdeveloped," making private technical cooperation — combined with government R&D support — essential to close the gap with Chinese incumbents.

Part B — Investment Analysis

The CATL Benchmark

China's CATL has moved fastest. Its Naxtra platform delivers 175 Wh/kg energy density and 10,000-plus cycle life, with mass production at the GWh scale expected by end-2026. In April 2026, CATL and HyperStrong signed a 60 GWh three-year supply agreement — the largest SIB deal on record. In February 2026, CATL and Changan launched the world's first mass-production passenger vehicle with a sodium-ion powertrain.

Korea's response to date has been fragmented: individual companies developed material components in isolation, limiting appeal to battery OEMs who need certified, integrated systems. The K-Sodium Alliance addresses this gap by offering a bundled cathode, electrolyte and anode package — compressing the vendor-qualification cycle for customers.

EcoPro BM (247540.KQ): The Core Play

EcoPro BM is KOSDAQ's largest company by market capitalisation and Korea's leading cathode-material supplier. The alliance is an incremental diversification move that adds a speculative option on the SIB market to an already-recovering earnings profile:

MetricQ1 2025Q1 2026YoY Change
RevenueKRW 629.8BKRW 605.4B-3.9%
Operating profitKRW 2.3BKRW 20.9B+809%
OP margin0.4%3.5%+3.1pp
Net income-KRW 30.6B+KRW 8.9BSwing to profit

The sodium-ion line remains pre-commercial. EcoPro BM has operated a pilot cathode line at Ochang and is in discussions with an unnamed domestic automaker — but no supply contract has been signed. SIB cathode revenue is not expected to be material before 2028 under most analyst scenarios.

That said, EcoPro BM's technology chief has stated the company's sodium cathode performance "surpasses China," leveraging existing lithium-ion production infrastructure to minimize transition costs. If the alliance lands a named OEM customer — particularly Hyundai Motor, Samsung SDI, or LG Energy Solution — EcoPro BM would become one of the few integrated SIB cathode suppliers outside China.

Soulbrain (036830.KQ): Electrolyte as Competitive Moat

Soulbrain Holdings (annual revenue ~USD 585M, founded 1986, headquartered in Seongnam) is Korea's leading battery and semiconductor chemical supplier. SIB electrolyte formulation is technically demanding: sodium's larger ionic radius requires purpose-built solvent chemistry, dissolving agents, and additive packages distinct from lithium-ion electrolytes. Soulbrain's existing Tier-1 manufacturing quality standard — already applied to Samsung and SK Hynix semiconductor processes — provides a credibility layer that pure-play SIB startups cannot easily replicate.

Aekyung Chemical: Anode as the Key Bottleneck

Aekyung Chemical (unlisted, founded 1970) targets hard carbon, the standard SIB anode material. Hard carbon's specific capacity and first-cycle Coulombic efficiency are the primary barriers to improving SIB energy density. Advances here would benefit the entire K-Sodium material stack.

Key Risks

  1. Energy density ceiling: CATL Naxtra reaches 175 Wh/kg — well below high-nickel Li-ion at 280+ Wh/kg — limiting long-range EV applications.
  2. Customer concentration: EcoPro BM derives ~94.7% of revenue from Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution; SIB revenue requires new OEM relationships that take years to qualify.
  3. Capex gap: Scaling from pilot line to GWh supply requires significant investment not yet committed publicly.
  4. China incumbency: CATL's first-mover advantage — co-developed cell designs, production scale, established OEM relationships — will be difficult to challenge quickly.

What to Watch

The K-Sodium Alliance is a near-zero-cost option on an USD 8.6B market. Near-term catalysts to monitor: - A named SIB OEM qualification trial (Hyundai Motor, Samsung SDI, or LG Energy Solution) - EcoPro BM capex guidance for sodium-ion production scale-up - Government inclusion of K-Sodium materials in Korea's national battery R&D roadmap
