Airbnb (ABNB) Q1 2026: 43% Tax Rate Caps Net Income at $160M

Airbnb's operating income more than doubled to $86 million in the first quarter of 2026, yet net income rose only $6 million — because the effective tax rate jumped from 11.0% to 43.1% on a one-time $69 million deferred tax asset write-down tied to the U.S. Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax. Strip that charge and the offsetting $70 million gain on an equity investment sale, and normalized net income was $159 million, essentially flat against the prior year. The number that actually matters is further down the income statement: every single cost line improved as a percentage of revenue except sales and marketing, which widened by 3.3 percentage points as Airbnb bought international growth. Revenue rose 17.9% to $2,678 million while Nights and Seats Booked grew 9.1% to 156 million, meaning volume accounted for a slight majority — roughly 51% — of the top-line expansion, with the remaining 49% coming from higher average daily rates and mix.

1. Consolidated Balance Sheet

1-1. Principal asset movements

ItemDec 31, 2025 ($M)Mar 31, 2026 ($M)Change %
Cash and cash equivalents6,5607,037+7.3%
Short-term investments4,4544,968+11.5%
Funds receivable / held on behalf of customers6,95910,550+51.6%
Prepaids and other current assets8241,046+26.9%
Deferred income tax assets2,1021,941-7.7%
Goodwill and intangible assets, net770767-0.4%
Total assets22,20826,828+20.8%

The 20.8% swelling of the balance sheet is largely an accounting artifact. Funds receivable and amounts held on behalf of customers ($10,550 million) is matched to the dollar by funds payable to customers ($10,550 million) — guest money in transit to hosts, not Airbnb's capital. Excluding this custodial float, total assets grew from $15,249 million to $16,278 million, a far more modest 6.7%.

Airbnb carries no inventory and no separate property line on its balance sheet; goodwill and intangibles of $767 million against $26.8 billion of assets confirms how asset-light the marketplace model remains. The $161 million decline in deferred income tax assets is the visible footprint of the CAMT adjustment discussed below — a non-cash consumption of a balance sheet asset rather than a cash cost.

The debt maturity picture was rebuilt entirely during the quarter. On March 16, 2026 the company issued $2,500 million of senior unsecured notes in three tranches: $850 million of 4.40% notes due 2029, $850 million of 4.65% notes due 2031, and $800 million of 5.25% notes due 2036 — a 4.76% weighted-average coupon, 4.99% on an effective-interest basis. Roughly $1.7 billion, or 68% of principal, matures within five years, with the remaining $800 million thereafter. Interest rate swaps with $1.7 billion notional convert the 2031 and 2036 tranches to floating SOFR, leaving two-thirds of the new debt exposed to short-rate moves.

1-2. Liability structure — financial versus operating

ItemDec 31, 2025 ($M)Mar 31, 2026 ($M)
Current portion of long-term debt1,999
Long-term debt, net2,475
Financial debt subtotal1,9992,475
Funds payable to customers (custodial)6,95910,550
Unearned fees1,7432,733
Accrued expenses, accounts payable, other2,9483,081
Other liabilities, noncurrent360353
Total liabilities14,00919,192

Gross financial debt rose only $476 million, but its character changed completely. The retired $2.0 billion instrument was a 0% convertible note; the replacement carries a cash coupon of roughly $119 million a year. The filing notes that Q1 interest expense was immaterial — the notes were outstanding for only fifteen days — so approximately $30 million per quarter of interest cost is still ahead of the reported numbers. Against quarterly interest income of $155 million, itself down 10.4% from $173 million, the net interest line is set to compress from both directions.

Operating liabilities tell the demand story. Unearned fees grew 56.8% to $2,733 million, reflecting forward bookings for the summer season. Within accrued expenses, indirect taxes and estimated lodging and withholding tax liabilities climbed from $1,132 million to $1,501 million, a 32.6% increase that outpaced revenue growth and warrants monitoring alongside the contingencies in Section 4.

1-3. Capital structure

Total stockholders' equity fell 6.9% to $7,636 million even though the company earned $160 million. The bridge is straightforward: opening equity of $8,199 million plus $160 million net income, plus $60 million of other comprehensive income, plus $410 million of stock-based compensation, less $132 million of shares withheld for employee taxes, less $1,061 million of buybacks equals $7,636 million exactly.

Paid-in capital of $14,041 million against an accumulated deficit of $6,403 million is the signature of a company that has only recently turned durably profitable and is now returning capital aggressively. The deficit widened by $901 million in a single quarter — buybacks are charged directly against it. This is a deliberate shrinking of the equity base, not deterioration: equity-to-assets excluding custodial float stands at 46.9%, and the company holds $12,005 million of cash and short-term investments against $2,475 million of debt, a net cash position of $9,530 million that improved from $9,015 million at year-end.

2. Consolidated Statement of Operations

2-1. Core profitability, three-year first-quarter comparison

ItemQ1 2024 ($M)Q1 2025 ($M)Q1 2026 ($M)2Y CAGR
Revenue2,1422,2722,678+11.8%
Income from operations1013886-7.7%
Operating margin (%)4.711.673.21
Net income264154160-22.2%
Net margin (%)12.326.785.97

Q1 2024 and Q1 2025 figures verified against SEC XBRL company concept data; Q1 2026 from the filing.

The headline recovery is real but incomplete. Operating income of $86 million is up 126.3% year on year, yet still below the $101 million Airbnb earned in Q1 2024 on 20% less revenue. Over two years the top line compounded at 11.8% while operating income shrank at 7.7% annually — the multi-year picture is one of revenue scale being converted into market share rather than margin.

Operating leverage was extreme in the quarter: 17.9% revenue growth produced 126.3% operating income growth, roughly 7.1x, but that multiple is an artifact of a 1.67% starting margin, not evidence of structural leverage. Below the operating line, pre-tax income rose 62.4% to $281 million with help from the $70 million realized gain on the sale of a privately-held equity investment acquired by a third party. The $121 million tax provision — against just $40 million of cash taxes actually paid — includes the $69 million CAMT-driven deferred tax asset adjustment plus reduced stock-based compensation deductions. Excluding the equity gain, pre-tax income was $211 million (+22.0%); excluding the CAMT charge, tax expense was $52 million for a 24.6% rate and normalized net income of $159 million.

Diluted EPS rose 8.3% to $0.26 while net income rose only 3.9%. The gap is buybacks: diluted share count fell 3.8% from 632 million to 608 million, contributing roughly 3.9 percentage points of the EPS gain. Airbnb repurchased 8.1 million Class A shares for $1,088 million in cash at an average of about $134 per share, with $4.5 billion of authorization remaining.

2-2. Fixed versus variable cost behavior

The filing's segment note discloses expenses by natural classification, which separates the discretionary spending decision from everything else:

Expense (natural)Q1 2025 ($M)Q1 2026 ($M)Change %
Merchant fees and chargebacks399474+18.8%
Salaries and benefits507587+15.8%
Marketing382506+32.5%
Stock-based compensation358410+14.5%
Professional and third-party services260282+8.5%
Non-income taxes5748-15.8%
Other items271285+5.2%
Total costs and expenses2,2342,592+16.0%

Merchant fees, the genuinely variable line, grew 18.8% — almost exactly in step with 19.1% gross booking value growth, as it should. The largely fixed block of salaries, stock compensation, professional services and other items grew 12.0%, comfortably below revenue growth of 17.9%. That is real leverage.

Marketing is where management chose to spend it. As reported on the income statement, sales and marketing rose 33.4% to $751 million, moving from 24.8% to 28.0% of revenue. Every other line improved: cost of revenue fell 0.58pp to 21.7% of revenue, operations and support fell 1.16pp, product development fell 1.18pp, and general and administrative fell 1.89pp to 11.1%. Had sales and marketing merely held its prior-year revenue ratio, operating income would have been roughly $173 million rather than $86 million — the entire margin shortfall is one deliberate line item.

One structural note on comparability: the company early-adopted ASU 2025-06 on internally developed software capitalization effective January 1, 2026 on a prospective basis, with no impact at adoption and none expected for full-year 2026. Comparability of the product development line with prior periods is therefore unaffected this quarter.

3. Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows

ItemQ1 2025 ($M)Q1 2026 ($M)Change
Net cash from operating activities1,7891,708-4.5%
Net cash used in investing activities(151)(461)
Net cash from financing activities2,1452,970+38.5%
Effect of exchange rates207(118)
Cash, equivalents and restricted cash, end of period16,75017,585+5.0%

Cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash ended the quarter at $17,585 million, up $4,099 million from $13,486 million at year-end 2025.

Because Airbnb owns almost no fixed assets, free cash flow is effectively operating cash flow — the company states both were $1.7 billion this quarter against $1.8 billion a year ago. But the margin deteriorated sharply: free cash flow equalled 63.8% of revenue versus 78.7% in Q1 2025.

The cause sits in working capital rather than earnings. The unearned fees build contributed $988 million to operating cash flow, down from $1,105 million a year earlier, despite gross booking value rising 19.1%. Management attributes lengthening lead times partly to expansion of deferred payment programs — guests who book now and pay later generate the booking but not the upfront cash. Higher volume with less cash collected in advance is precisely what a shrinking deferred-fee build looks like, and it is the single most important item to track next quarter.

Reported earnings quality looks spectacular at 10.7x operating cash flow to net income, but that ratio is dominated by float and non-cash add-backs. Stripping the unearned fee build and stock compensation leaves roughly $310 million of underlying cash earnings, against $326 million on the same basis a year earlier — flat to slightly down, consistent with the normalized net income figure.

Financing activity requires the same custodial adjustment as the balance sheet. Of the $2,970 million inflow, $3,707 million is simply the increase in funds payable to customers. Excluding it, Airbnb was a net returner of capital: $2,483 million of debt proceeds less $2,000 million of principal repayment, less $1,088 million of buybacks and $140 million of equity award taxes, plus $8 million of option exercises — a net outflow of $737 million, moderated from $929 million a year ago, as $483 million of net new long-term debt more than offset the increase in share repurchases.
