Allstate (ALL) Q2 2026: EPS Up 61% to $12.51, Underlying Margin Flat
Allstate's headline quarter is genuinely strong, but it is not a margin story. Diluted earnings per share rose 61.2% to $12.51 and the property-liability combined ratio improved 4.5 points to 86.6, yet the ratio stripped of catastrophes and prior-year reserve releases barely moved — 79.4 versus 79.5 a year ago, an improvement of one tenth of a point. The company's own adjusted (operating) measure tells the same story more plainly: adjusted net income of $8.99 per share rose 51.3%, well short of the 61.2% GAAP gain, because the GAAP figure carries $1,055 million of investment gains that the operating number excludes.
The headline improvement came mostly from two items that insurers do not control from quarter to quarter: catastrophe losses that fell 13.5% year on year to $1,722 million, and $692 million of reserves released from older accident years. How far below a normal storm year this quarter sits cannot be judged from the 10-Q, which discloses no long-run average catastrophe load. For a property and casualty insurer in a maturing pricing cycle, the question is not whether this quarter was good. It is how much of it is repeatable.

The investment portfolio grew $4.57 billion in six months, and the mix shifted. Equity securities rose from $8,398 million to $11,159 million, with cost basis up from $8,026 million to $10,071 million — meaning Allstate put roughly $2.0 billion of fresh money into stocks rather than bonds. Fixed income grew more slowly, from $59,115 million to $60,809 million.
