LG (003550.KS) Q1 2026: Equity Earnings Halve, Profit Slumps 35%

Record net asset value masks a sharp earnings retreat as LG Electronics and LG Chem drag equity-method income to a multi-quarter low.

Source: Q1 2026 Quarterly Report — Filed March 31, 2026 with DART | Consolidated Financial Statements | Unit: ₩ billions

LG Corp., the holding company at the apex of the LG conglomerate, reported consolidated operating profit of ₩413.8 billion in Q1 2026, a 35.1% year-on-year decline driven almost entirely by a collapse in equity-method earnings. The consolidated top line — which incorporates both subsidiary revenues and equity-method income in a single line item — fell 7.0% to ₩1,800.6 billion as equity-method income contracted 47.8%, from ₩481.8 billion to ₩251.5 billion, reflecting simultaneous headwinds at LG Electronics, LG Chem, and LG Energy Solution. Against this earnings retreat, however, the market's estimate of LG Corp.'s net asset value reached an all-time high of approximately ₩37.46 trillion, per sell-side consensus, and the NAV discount to market capitalization tightened from approximately 45% at end-2025 to around 40%, with LG CNS's February 2025 IPO and LG Electronics' share price appreciation as the primary re-rating catalysts. The resulting tension — deteriorating earnings flow versus expanding asset stock — defines the investment narrative for LG Corp. this quarter.

Note: This report covers LG Corp. (the holding company, ticker 003550) exclusively. LG Electronics, LG Chem, LG Uplus, LG CNS, and other operating subsidiaries are separately listed or unlisted entities. This analysis addresses LG Corp.'s consolidated and standalone financials and the value of its equity stakes — not the underlying subsidiaries' own operating performance.

The holding company balance sheet resolves to a single dominating entry. Of total assets of ₩35.04 trillion, investments in associates and joint ventures stand at ₩24.89 trillion — approximately 71% of the entire asset base. This line item carries LG Corp.'s equity-method book value in LG Electronics, LG Chem, LG Uplus, LG CNS, and a range of unlisted subsidiaries. The quarter-on-quarter increase of ₩1,213.3 billion (+5.1%) reflects two components running in parallel: equity-method earnings accrued during the quarter (₩251.5 billion) and equity-method capital adjustments arising from movements in subsidiaries' other comprehensive income.

The 46.2% decline in trade receivables — from ₩1,687.6 billion to ₩907.1 billion — is seasonal, not a credit event. The bulk of consolidated receivables originates from IT services subsidiary LG CNS, whose year-end project billings are heavily collected in the first quarter; the cash flow statement's trade receivable reversal of +₩802.8 billion confirms this conversion. Property, plant, and equipment and intangibles are essentially unchanged from year-end, a natural reflection of the holding company's asset-light model — there are no manufacturing facilities, refineries, or battery plants sitting on LG Corp.'s own balance sheet.

OCI drives capital more than earnings. Accumulated other comprehensive income expanded from ₩5,189.2 billion to ₩6,383.7 billion, a ₩1,194.5 billion (+23.0%) increase. The primary driver was equity-method capital adjustments from subsidiaries (approximately +₩1,061.0 billion), supplemented by fair value gains on other financial assets (+₩137.5 billion). Total equity grew by ₩1,268.0 billion in the quarter, but only ₩83.9 billion of that increase came through retained earnings — the controlling shareholders' net profit of ₩339.8 billion was nearly offset by the accrual of a regular dividend payable, which is visible in the ₩229.8 billion increase in other payables. Earnings are moving one direction; the balance sheet is moving another.

Liability Structure: Near-Zero Financial Leverage

Total liabilities declined from ₩3,648.1 billion at year-end to ₩3,441.8 billion, a 5.7% reduction driven by the repayment of ₩230.0 billion in corporate bonds during the quarter. Interest-bearing financial debt now consists almost entirely of ₩159.9 billion in long-term borrowings. Lease liabilities, current and non-current combined, total ₩397.8 billion, reflecting IFRS 16 recognition of operating leases. Operating liabilities include trade payables of ₩509.0 billion, other payables of ₩747.3 billion (which absorbed the dividend accrual), and provisions.

With total equity of ₩31,602.8 billion against total liabilities of ₩3,441.8 billion, the debt-to-equity ratio stands at 10.9% — the unmistakable fingerprint of a holding company whose balance sheet function is to hold, not to borrow and deploy.

Capital Quality

Paid-in capital of approximately ₩3,937.9 billion (share capital ₩801.3 billion plus share premium ₩3,136.6 billion) is dwarfed by retained earnings of ₩21,480.4 billion — decades of accumulated subsidiary earnings redistributed upward through dividends and compounded at the parent level. The other capital adjustment of -₩1,815.0 billion represents treasury shares acquired in prior periods; no change this quarter indicates no new buyback or cancellation activity was initiated. The layering of massive retained earnings atop a large and growing OCI reserve is the structural hallmark of a financially mature holding company with deep subsidiary ties and no near-term leverage imperative.

Income Statement

Top-Line Mechanics: Equity Income Embedded in Revenue

ItemQ1 2025 (₩B)Q1 2026 (₩B)Change
Net revenue and equity-method income1,936.11,800.6-7.0%

Operating profit638.0413.8-35.1%
Operating margin33.0%23.0%-10.0pp
Quarterly net profit379.0

LG Corp.'s income statement carries an architectural feature absent from standard manufacturing companies: the top-line figure "net revenue and equity-method income" bundles product and service sales with equity-method earnings from subsidiaries in a single consolidated line. In Q1 2026, this combined line totaled ₩1,800.6 billion, of which ₩251.5 billion — roughly 14% — was equity-method income rather than operating revenue from goods or services delivered. The arithmetic of the operating profit decline is therefore direct: the ₩230.3 billion deterioration in equity-method income (from ₩481.8 billion to ₩251.5 billion) accounts for virtually the entire ₩224.2 billion year-on-year drop in operating profit. The underlying operating businesses, by contrast, grew revenue 6.5% — the holding company's commercial and IT services subsidiaries held up; the damage is concentrated in the minority-owned subsidiaries that feed the equity-method line.

Segment decomposition sharpens the picture. Aggregating segment results before intercompany eliminations, total operating profit reaches ₩438.7 billion. The holding company segment — LG Corp. standalone, capturing dividend income, brand royalties, and rental income — contributes ₩337.3 billion (77% of the pre-elimination total). The IT services segment (LG CNS) adds ₩94.2 billion, up 18.6% from ₩79.4 billion a year earlier. The sports segment posts a seasonal loss of -₩11.8 billion reflecting the baseball off-season. Real estate (D&O) and other segments make up the balance. A consolidation adjustment of -₩24.9 billion, encompassing intercompany eliminations and equity-method reclassifications, produces the reported consolidated operating profit of ₩413.8 billion. The structure is clear: the holding company and IT services segments provide earnings stability; all variability flows from equity-method income, which moves with subsidiary business cycles.

Standalone Revenue: Dividends Fund Seven-Tenths

The "own-strength" view of LG Corp. comes from its standalone financials, which strip out LG CNS and other consolidated subsidiaries and expose the holding company's direct cash-receiving capacity. Standalone operating revenue in Q1 2026 was ₩393.1 billion, down 2.8% year-on-year, producing standalone operating profit of ₩337.3 billion (-3.2%). Revenue composition: dividend income ₩275.2 billion (70.0%, -2.0%), brand royalties from the LG trademark ₩88.2 billion (22.4%, +1.6%), and rental and other income ₩29.7 billion (7.6%, -18.9%).

That dividends account for 70% of standalone revenue means LG Corp.'s cash-receiving capacity is directly coupled to subsidiaries' dividend capacity — which depends in turn on their earnings cycles. The modest royalty growth of 1.6% signals that the group's consolidated revenue base has held even as profitability in several subsidiaries has compressed. Rental income declined more sharply but represents a small fraction of the total and does not alter the underlying dynamic: subsidiary dividends are the fiscal spine of the holding company.

Cash Flow

ItemQ1 2026 (₩B)
Operating cash flow+429.7
Investing cash flow-190.6
Financing cash flow-256.2
Closing cash and cash equivalents1,499.1

Operating cash flow of ₩429.7 billion exceeds net profit of ₩379.0 billion, producing an earnings quality ratio (operating CF / net profit) of 1.13x — healthy by conventional standards. The dynamics beneath this figure require context. The +₩802.8 billion seasonal recovery of trade receivables (LG CNS's year-end project collection cycle discussed in the balance sheet section) provided a substantial working capital inflow, while the deduction of non-cash equity-method income of ₩251.5 billion and standard accrual adjustments kept the gap from becoming misleading. These seasonal patterns make Q1 operating cash flow a poor standalone indicator of quarterly run-rate; full-year trends are the more meaningful frame.

Capital expenditure is nominal: ₩51.3 billion in PP&E acquisitions plus ₩5.3 billion in intangibles totals ₩56.6 billion — barely 3% of operating revenue. Free cash flow, calculated as operating cash flow less capex, reaches approximately ₩373.1 billion. An asset-light holding company generates no capital-intensive parent-level spending; capex resides within operating subsidiaries that own the physical assets and appear only in their own standalone statements.

Financing outflows reflect deliberate deleveraging. The ₩230.0 billion corporate bond repayment dominates the -₩256.2 billion financing outflow, accompanied by ₩26.2 billion in lease liability payments. No new debt was raised in the quarter, and no share buybacks were executed. LG Corp.'s capital allocation posture this quarter was conservative and consistent: collect receivables, retire debt, accrue the dividend payable, preserve liquidity. Investing outflows of -₩190.6 billion are largely explained by a net increase in deposits at financial institutions — a cash management movement rather than a strategic commitment.

Key Findings

Earnings Flow vs. Asset Stock: The Defining Divergence

The central paradox of Q1 2026 for LG Corp. is that its earnings deteriorated while its assessed value improved. Operating profit declined 35% and equity-method income halved — yet the market's estimated NAV reached an all-time high of approximately ₩37.46 trillion, per sell-side consensus, and the NAV discount narrowed from approximately 45% to approximately 40%. This divergence requires an accounting explanation.

NAV is a market value construct, not a book value one. The ₩24.89 trillion book value of equity investments on the balance sheet uses equity-method cost as the measurement basis — it does not capture the market capitalizations of listed subsidiaries. When sell-side analysts estimate LG Corp.'s NAV at ₩37.46 trillion — a ₩12.57 trillion premium over book — they are marking LG Electronics, LG CNS, and LG Uplus equity stakes to current market prices. The upward NAV revision this quarter was driven primarily by the estimated ₩16.83 trillion market value of the LG Electronics stake and the estimated ₩5.07 trillion value of the LG CNS stake. These are external estimates, not balance sheet figures, and investors should treat them as such. What the book value of ₩24.89 trillion and the estimated NAV of ₩37.46 trillion agree on is that the equity stake portfolio is large, illiquid at the consolidated level, and highly sensitive to subsidiary share price movements — not to the holding company's own quarterly earnings.

LG CNS as the New Earnings Pillar

The IPO of LG CNS in February 2025 created a publicly priced subsidiary within the consolidated perimeter, and Q1 2026 results confirm that its growth is structural rather than cyclical. Revenue of ₩1,315.0 billion grew 8.6% year-on-year (+₩103.6 billion), and operating profit rose from ₩79.4 billion to ₩94.2 billion, an 18.6% increase that reflects margin expansion rather than mere volume. Cloud infrastructure, AI transformation services (AX), and smart engineering — including robotics deployments — are driving above-market growth in a business that previously had no public valuation reference point. For LG Corp. as a holding company, LG CNS matters on two levels simultaneously: it contributes directly to consolidated operating profit at above-average growth, and its listed status means the value is now observable and can mechanically contribute to further NAV discount compression as institutional coverage widens.

Subsidiary Cycle Position and Equity-Method Sensitivity

The 47.8% collapse in equity-method income is not idiosyncratic to LG Corp. — it reflects where its two largest profit contributors sit in their respective business cycles. LG Energy Solution recorded a consolidated operating loss of approximately ₩207.8 billion in Q1 2026, a consequence of the EV demand pause and its structural reliance on U.S. IRA Advanced Manufacturing Production Credits (AMPC), whose policy trajectory has introduced uncertainty into earnings modeling. LG Chem's petrochemical segment remains near the trough of its spread cycle, compressed by global overcapacity with origins in Chinese capacity additions. LG Electronics experienced softness in home appliances and automotive components, though it remained profitable. The combined effect on LG Corp.'s equity-method line was a halving from ₩481.8 billion to ₩251.5 billion in a single quarter. Until at least one of these large subsidiaries exits its trough, equity-method income faces sustained pressure — and because this income flows directly into the consolidated operating profit line, any genuine cycle recovery would produce outsized earnings leverage at the holding company level relative to what the underlying operational improvement might suggest.

Contingent Liability: D&O's Subon Stake Agreement

Real estate subsidiary D&O holds a compensation obligation linked to its divestiture of a stake in Subon. If average annual gross profit over a defined measurement period falls below a contractually specified threshold, D&O is obligated to make a compensatory payment; the counterparty may exercise the relevant option in 2029 or earlier. LG Corp. has assessed the probability of a cash outflow as low. The full terms, measurement period, and maximum potential exposure are disclosed in Note 27 (Contingencies and Commitments) of the consolidated financial statements. This is not a material near-term concern based on current disclosure, but it is a tail item that warrants monitoring as real estate market conditions and Subon's underlying profitability evolve toward the option window.

Capital Allocation and Dividend Capacity

With a debt-to-equity ratio of 10.9%, quarterly free cash flow of approximately ₩373.1 billion, and ₩1.50 trillion in closing cash, LG Corp. retains exceptional balance sheet flexibility. The quarter's financing outflows — ₩230.0 billion bond repayment and dividend accrual — represent the default capital allocation priority for a mature holding company: liability reduction and shareholder return. No incremental equity investment activity in subsidiaries was visible, and no share buyback or cancellation occurred. The absence of capital redeployment this quarter is neither alarming nor surprising; LG Corp. historically allocates opportunistically through subsidiary capital support during downturns rather than via secondary market purchases. As subsidiary cycles recover, the capital allocation question sharpens: surplus cash toward incremental subsidiary investment, accelerated shareholder returns, or preservation pending the next strategic commitment.

Outlook

The bull case rests on cycle recovery and NAV re-rating. If LG Energy Solution's battery volumes recover in the second half of 2026 as EV adoption stabilizes and U.S. IRA policy visibility improves, and if LG Chem's petrochemical spreads begin to widen from their cycle trough, equity-method income could rebound with meaningful operating leverage: a return to Q1 2025's ₩481.8 billion equity-method contribution alone would restore consolidated operating profit toward ₩600 billion territory — roughly a 45% improvement from the Q1 2026 base — without any change to LG Corp.'s own cost structure. LG CNS's structural growth in cloud and AI services adds an independent earnings driver that was not present in prior cycles, providing a floor beneath consolidated results even if commodity-exposed subsidiaries remain depressed. Simultaneously, as more institutional investors incorporate the LG CNS IPO value into NAV estimates, holding company discount compression could provide a second re-rating catalyst independent of the earnings recovery; such combined re-ratings have historically re-priced conglomerate holding companies sharply and quickly.

The bear case centers on delayed recovery and dividend pressure. If the EV demand pause extends into 2027 and petrochemical oversupply persists through the LG Chem cycle, LG Energy Solution and LG Chem — which together represent a substantial portion of the subsidiary equity-method contribution — could remain loss-making or marginally profitable for multiple quarters. LG Corp.'s standalone revenue is 70% dependent on dividends from subsidiaries; a sustained earnings downturn at the subsidiary level would reduce both dividend receipts and equity-method income, creating a simultaneous pressure on both the standalone and consolidated income statement. The current operating profit of ₩413.8 billion is a meaningful step down from prior cycle peaks, and there is no independent business driver at the holding level capable of compensating for prolonged subsidiary weakness.

Balance sheet quality remains a structural strength in either scenario: near-zero leverage, ₩1.50 trillion in readily available cash, and a quarterly free cash flow of ₩373.1 billion provide significant buffer against earnings volatility and leave optionality intact. Earnings quality — operating CF / net profit of 1.13x — is solid despite seasonal distortions. The single most important forward indicator to monitor is the quarterly equity-method income figure. Its trajectory in Q2 and Q3 2026 will determine whether LG Corp.'s current NAV premium over book value represents genuine re-rating or premature optimism.
