HD Hyundai (267250.KS) Q1 2026: ₩2.8T OP Doubles, Parent Gets 38%

Shipbuilding, refining, and power systems all hit cycle peaks simultaneously — yet the holding company's structural minority discount meant parent shareholders captured only ₩780 billion of the group's ₩2.02 trillion in net income.

Source: Q1 2026 Quarterly Report — Filed May 15, 2026 with DART | Consolidated Financial Statements | Unit: ₩ billions

HD Hyundai posted consolidated revenue of ₩19.60 trillion and operating profit of ₩2.83 trillion in Q1 2026, more than doubling prior-year earnings as shipbuilding, refining, and power systems converged at simultaneous cycle peaks. The operating margin expanded 690 basis points to 14.5%, illustrating the classic fixed-cost leverage of capital-intensive industries once volume clears the break-even threshold. Yet the defining number for holding company investors is not ₩2.83 trillion — it is ₩780 billion: the 38.6% share of group net income that ultimately flows to HD Hyundai's own shareholders, with the remaining 61.4% attributable to minority interests in listed subsidiaries including HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Electric, and HD Hyundai Marine Solution. Reading this report through that lens — not how much the group earned, but how much reaches the holding company's owners — is the analytical starting point.

Balance Sheet — Boom Stacks Up in Working Capital

Key Asset Items

Item Dec 2025 (₩T) Mar 2026 (₩T) Change
Cash and cash equivalents 6.37 9.52 +49.6%
Trade receivables and other current receivables 6.68 8.44 +26.4%
Inventories 10.23 10.92 +6.8%
Current contract assets (unbilled work) 8.12 8.59 +5.8%
Property, plant and equipment 28.16 28.19 +0.1%
Intangible assets 4.31 4.31
Total assets 78.69 85.15 +8.2%

Total assets grew ₩6.46 trillion in a single quarter, with more than half of that increase concentrated in cash (+₩3.15 trillion) and trade receivables (+₩1.76 trillion). The receivables line deserves attention: it expanded 26.4%, materially outpacing the 14.7% revenue growth rate. This is a textbook pattern for boom cycles — credit sales accumulate quickly when demand is robust — and is not a red flag in isolation, but collection velocity warrants monitoring in the quarters ahead.

Property, plant and equipment came in essentially flat at ₩28.19 trillion. The group is absorbing the cyclical uplift through existing refinery capacity and shipyard docks rather than committing to large-scale greenfield additions. This is precisely the operating leverage dynamic that drives disproportionate profit growth: fixed costs are already absorbed, so incremental revenue flows largely to the bottom line. Contract assets (unbilled work-in-progress) of ₩8.59 trillion reflect active revenue recognition on a percentage-of-completion basis across the shipbuilding and offshore project portfolio.

Liability Structure — Financial Debt vs. Operating Liabilities

Total liabilities reached ₩53.43 trillion, up 10.5% from year-end, lifting the debt-to-equity ratio from 159.4% to 168.4%. The composition matters more than the headline figure.

Operating liabilities account for a substantial portion of the increase: trade payables of ₩12.03 trillion (+15.2%) and current contract liabilities (advance payments received from customers) of ₩16.40 trillion (+3.1%). Contract liabilities appear as a balance sheet obligation, but economically they are pre-booked future revenue paid in advance by shipbuilding and plant customers — a rising balance here is a favorable signal, not a cause for concern. Financial liabilities — current borrowings and bonds of ₩6.21 trillion plus non-current of ₩9.10 trillion, together with lease liabilities of approximately ₩2.05 trillion — imply gross interest-bearing debt of roughly ₩15 trillion. Against ₩9.52 trillion in cash, the group's net financial leverage remains manageable at the consolidated level. The key takeaway is that the headline debt increase is driven more by "good" advance-payment liabilities than by incremental borrowing.

Equity Structure — Minority Interest Owns 66% of Capital

Equity Item Dec 2025 (₩T) Mar 2026 (₩T) Change
Equity attributable to owners of the parent 10.12 10.93 +8.0%
Non-controlling interests 20.22 20.79 +2.8%
Total equity 30.34 31.72 +4.6%
(Memo) Retained earnings 3.13 3.83 +22.1%

The equity split encapsulates HD Hyundai's essential identity as a holding company. Of ₩31.72 trillion in total equity, only ₩10.93 trillion (34%) belongs to HD Hyundai's shareholders; the remaining ₩20.79 trillion (66%) represents minority stakes in listed subsidiaries. Paid-in capital (share capital ₩80 billion plus capital surplus ₩5.74 trillion = ₩5.82 trillion) is largely fixed, while the parent's retained earnings expanded 22.1% in a single quarter — a meaningful improvement in equity quality that reflects the quarter's concentrated earnings delivery.

Income Statement — Operating Leverage at Cycle Peak

Core Earnings Metrics

Item Q1 2025 (₩T) Q1 2026 (₩T) Change
Revenue 17.09 19.60 +14.7%
Cost of revenue 14.90 15.68 +5.3%
Gross profit 2.19 3.92 +78.8%
Operating profit 1.29 2.83 +120.4%
Operating margin (%) 7.5% 14.5% +6.9 pp
Net income for the period 0.78 2.02 +160.2%
Net income attributable to parent shareholders 0.22 0.78 +256.4%
Basic EPS (₩) 3,101 11,054 +256.5%

Revenue grew 14.7% while operating profit surged 120.4%, implying a degree of operating leverage of approximately 8.2x — for every 1% gain in revenue, operating profit expanded roughly 8.2%. This is the characteristic earnings acceleration of capital-intensive, high-fixed-cost industries once revenue decisively exceeds the break-even level. The cost-of-revenue ratio falling from 87.2% to 80.0% — a 7.2-percentage-point compression — was the single most powerful driver of margin expansion.

Net income growth (+160.2%) exceeded operating profit growth (+120.4%) as financial income and equity-method earnings provided additional lift. The most consequential figure for holding company investors, however, is the 256% surge in parent-attributable net income — evidence that the cycle's rewards are being transmitted to HD Hyundai's own shareholders through financial leverage, not only to subsidiary minority owners. Even so, at 38.6% of consolidated net income (up from 28.2% in Q1 2025), more than three-fifths of group earnings still exits to minority interest holders. The ratio improved, but the structural leakage remains the defining characteristic of this investment.

Revenue by Segment

Segment Q1 2026 Revenue (₩T) Share
Shipbuilding & offshore 8.10 41%
Refining 7.55 39%
Construction equipment 2.38 12%
Electric & electronic systems 0.95 5%
Marine services 0.54 3%
Other (robotics, etc.) 0.08
Total 19.60 100%

Shipbuilding and refining together account for 80% of group revenue, concentrating the business in two cyclical industries whose margins move with order cycle timing and commodity spreads respectively. By external scale, these two segments define the group; by growth momentum, shipbuilding and electric & electronic systems are the engines. The refining segment carries the largest revenue share but also the highest margin volatility, making it the principal determinant of quarter-to-quarter earnings swings. Electric & electronic systems, despite its 5% revenue contribution, is growing most rapidly — driven by the global transformer supercycle tied to power grid modernization and data center electricity demand.

Cash Flow — Earnings Quality Passes the Test

Item Q1 2025 (₩T) Q1 2026 (₩T)
Operating cash flow 2.73 2.38
Investing cash flow +0.66
Financing cash flow +0.01
Ending cash balance 9.52

Operating cash flow of ₩2.38 trillion exceeded net income of ₩2.02 trillion, producing a cash earnings quality ratio (operating CF / net income) of 1.18x. A ratio above 1.0x confirms that reported profits are backed by real cash generation — an important check in a boom quarter when receivables are expanding rapidly. The year-on-year decline from ₩2.73 trillion reflects the working capital drag from the receivables build; the underlying cash generation capacity remains intact.

Capital expenditure of ₩450 billion came in at just 2.3% of revenue, consistent with the group running existing capacity hard rather than initiating new capacity additions. Free cash flow reached approximately ₩1.93 trillion for the quarter (operating CF ₩2.38 trillion minus capex ₩450 billion). Investing activities contributed a net inflow of ₩660 billion, primarily from short-term financial asset management, pushing the ending cash balance to ₩9.52 trillion. That accumulation creates substantial optionality for dividends, buybacks, and strategic investment — the deployment of which will increasingly matter to holding company shareholders as the cycle matures.

Key Findings — Where Does Holding Company Value Reside?

Order Backlog: Three Years of Locked-In Revenue

Both shipbuilding and electric & electronic systems are order-backlog businesses, giving the group exceptional forward revenue visibility that is uncommon among Korean industrial conglomerates of comparable scale.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering carried a backlog of ₩89.09 trillion at quarter-end — ₩76.33 trillion in commercial vessels, ₩2.21 trillion in offshore plants, and ₩10.55 trillion in other contracts. At the Q1 2026 quarterly run rate of ₩8.10 trillion, this represents approximately 11 quarters, or 2.5 to 3 years of work already booked. The scale of the backlog simultaneously marks the current shipbuilding cycle as near its peak and establishes a structural revenue floor for the segment over the next several years even if new order intake slows.

HD Hyundai Electric's backlog of ₩11.44 trillion equals 12 times its Q1 quarterly revenue of ₩950 billion, reflecting the global surge in power transformer demand as electrical grids are upgraded and data center construction accelerates. The combined backlog of these two segments alone exceeds ₩100 trillion, providing meaningful downside protection for group revenue regardless of near-term cyclical fluctuations.

The Holding Company's Intrinsic Logic: Standalone Earnings and NAV Discount

On a standalone (parent-only) basis, HD Hyundai generated ₩370 billion in operating revenue for the quarter, composed of subsidiary dividends, brand royalties, and rental income. With virtually no operating cost base, the standalone operating margin approaches 95% and standalone operating profit totaled approximately ₩350 billion. Standalone net assets stand at ₩6.28 trillion.

The economic substance of HD Hyundai's equity valuation lies in the market value of its stakes in listed and unlisted subsidiaries — HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Electric, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, HD Hyundai Site Solution, and unlisted HD Hyundai Oilbank, among others. This aggregate net asset value (NAV) is the fundamental basis for the holding company's worth. Korean conglomerates structured this way typically trade at a 40–60% discount to NAV — a "double-listed discount" that is structural rather than transient. As subsidiary businesses thrive and NAV expands, that value does not automatically transmit to holding company shareholders. What matters most to HD Hyundai's owners is therefore not subsidiary operating profit in absolute terms, but rather the pace at which that profit returns upward via dividends and the visibility of the holding company's own capital return policy.

Geopolitical and Cycle Risk

The report's notes identify crude oil price volatility as a principal risk for the refining segment, specifically noting the roughly one-to-two-month lag between crude oil procurement and refined product sales, partially hedged through crude forward contracts. The filing does not disclose specific geopolitical scenarios or crude sourcing diversification details. External context is material here: Brent crude briefly spiked to approximately $118 per barrel in February–March 2026 following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, introducing meaningful refining margin volatility for any quarter straddling that period. The current 14.5% group operating margin should not be mechanically extrapolated; refining margins are sensitive to crack spread dynamics that can shift materially within a single quarter, and the geopolitical environment remains an active variable.

Shipbuilding, with a two-to-three year lag between order intake and vessel delivery, also carries inherent cycle risk. Current backlog visibility is high, but a softening in new orders would feed through to revenue and margin with a multi-year delay — and the current backlog was built partly at pricing set during a different market environment. Trade receivables growing at 26.4% against 14.7% revenue growth is worth tracking into subsequent quarters as a potential signal of collection risk if the cycle turns.

Outlook

HD Hyundai enters mid-2026 with ₩100 trillion in combined order backlog, ₩9.52 trillion in cash, and roughly ₩1.93 trillion in quarterly free cash flow. All three major segments — shipbuilding, refining, and power systems — are operating above historical average margins simultaneously, a configuration supported by structural demand from global LNG fleet expansion, energy security investment following geopolitical supply shocks, and AI-driven electricity grid buildout. The 256% growth in parent-attributable EPS signals that holding company shareholders are beginning to participate more meaningfully in the cycle's rewards, with the parent's share of consolidated net income recovering from 28.2% to 38.6% year-on-year.

The risk case centers on concentration and cycle timing. Revenue is 80% exposed to shipbuilding and refining — two industries whose margin peaks rarely coincide for extended periods. Refining profitability faces Strait of Hormuz supply disruptions, crude price volatility, and crack spread compression as the geopolitical environment evolves. Shipbuilding margins, protected by backlog through the near term, face the eventual drag of a new-order slowdown when the cycle turns. And structurally, even with ₩2.83 trillion in consolidated operating profit, HD Hyundai's own shareholders retained only ₩780 billion. Closing the NAV discount requires either a sustained increase in dividend flows from subsidiaries or a more explicit holding company-level capital return commitment — neither of which is yet formally committed.

Current cycle positioning: Shipbuilding — near peak, with strong backlog visibility providing a multi-year revenue floor. Refining — margin recovery phase with material geopolitical tail risk. Electric & electronic systems — early-to-mid structural growth cycle, not yet a cyclical peak.

As the group moves deeper into 2026 and 2027, capital allocation decisions — how ₩9.52 trillion in cash and roughly ₩1.93 trillion per quarter in free cash flow are deployed — will be an increasingly important determinant of whether the holding company discount narrows or persists.
