Founded in 1940 by Leonard Pool in Detroit, Air Products pioneered the on-site industrial gas model, building air separation plants next to customer facilities rather than trucking product in. It relocated to the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, where it remains headquartered in Allentown, and expanded through mid-century into chemicals, equipment, and international gas markets. In 2017 it divested its performance materials division to Evonik and its electronic materials business to Versum Materials, which was later acquired by Merck KGaA, refocusing the company on core industrial gases and equipment. The business runs on long-duration take-or-pay contracts, typically fifteen to twenty years, under which Air Products builds, owns, and operates a gas plant at or adjacent to a customer site and receives fixed capacity payments plus pass-through of energy and feedstock costs. This on-site model, complemented by pipeline networks in the U.S. Gulf Coast and elsewhere, merchant liquid deliveries, and packaged cylinder gas, produces highly recurring cash flow and creates local monopolies that are difficult for rivals to dislodge once contracts are signed. It competes globally with Linde, the industry leader after the Praxair merger, and Air Liquide of France, with substantial revenue generated outside the United States across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
