About Air Products and Chemicals
Air Products & Chemicals is one of the world's largest industrial gas producers, supplying atmospheric gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon), process gases (hydrogen, helium, carbon dioxide), and specialty gases to customers across refining, chemicals, metals, electronics, food, healthcare, and energy. It also designs and builds equipment for gas processing, including LNG heat exchangers and air separation units, and has committed heavily to low- and zero-carbon hydrogen megaprojects intended to serve mobility and heavy industry. Revenue is reported through regional industrial gas segments — the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Middle East and India — plus a corporate and other line that houses the equipment sale-of-plant business. The regional industrial gas operations, led by the Americas, generate the bulk of operating profit.
Serious holders track the pace, cost, and offtake security of the company's flagship hydrogen and carbon-capture projects, including the NEOM green hydrogen joint venture in Saudi Arabia and Louisiana and Alberta blue hydrogen developments, because construction budgets and startup timing shape the multi-year earnings trajectory. Governance history matters: an activist campaign in 2025 reshaped the board and led to a chief executive transition, sharpening scrutiny of capital allocation discipline, project sequencing, and the balance between long-cycle clean-hydrogen bets and the traditional on-site gas backlog. Investors also monitor customer concentration in refining and electronics, energy pass-through mechanics in contracts, foreign exchange translation, and the company's long-standing dividend record.
Founded in 1940 by Leonard Pool in Detroit, Air Products pioneered the on-site industrial gas model, building air separation plants next to customer facilities rather than trucking product in. It relocated to the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, where it remains headquartered in Allentown, and expanded through mid-century into chemicals, equipment, and international gas markets. In 2017 it divested its performance materials division to Evonik and its electronic materials business to Versum Materials, which was later acquired by Merck KGaA, refocusing the company on core industrial gases and equipment. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange under APD and is a component of the S&P 500.
The business runs on long-duration take-or-pay contracts, typically fifteen to twenty years, under which Air Products builds, owns, and operates a gas plant at or adjacent to a customer site and receives fixed capacity payments plus pass-through of energy and feedstock costs. This on-site model, complemented by pipeline networks in the U.S. Gulf Coast and elsewhere, merchant liquid deliveries, and packaged cylinder gas, produces highly recurring cash flow and creates local monopolies that are difficult for rivals to dislodge once contracts are signed. It competes globally with Linde, the industry leader after the Praxair merger, and Air Liquide of France, with substantial revenue generated outside the United States across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
