Agilent Technologiesについて
Agilent Technologies is a laboratory instrumentation and services company that sells the tools scientists use to identify, quantify and characterize the chemical and biological composition of samples. Its portfolio spans liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, cell analysis and genomics reagents, together with the consumables, columns and software that run on that installed base, plus a growing contract manufacturing operation for nucleic acid therapeutics. Revenue is organized into three segments — Life Sciences and Applied Markets, Agilent CrossLab (services and consumables), and the Diagnostics and Genomics Group — with pharma, biotech, chemicals, food, environmental and academic labs as the main end markets. The recurring CrossLab franchise typically anchors segment profit.
Serious holders track the pharmaceutical and biotech customer base, which is Agilent's largest end market and drives both instrument replacement cycles and consumables pull-through, so anything affecting biopharma capital spending or China lab demand matters. The installed-base-to-consumables ratio, service attach rates and the pace at which the NASD nucleic acid manufacturing site fills capacity are structural KPIs. Foreign exchange exposure is meaningful given the international revenue mix, and tariff regimes on U.S.–China scientific trade recur as a risk. Governance features include a single-class share structure, an independent board, and a capital allocation framework that pairs a modest dividend with sustained buybacks and bolt-on acquisitions rather than transformational deals.
Agilent traces to Hewlett-Packard's original test-and-measurement roots and was spun out of HP in a 1999 IPO as a standalone measurement company covering communications, semiconductors, life sciences and chemical analysis. The subsequent decades reshaped it into a pure analytical laboratory business: the semiconductor products unit became Verigy in 2006, the electronic measurement business was separated as Keysight Technologies in a 2014 spin-off, and the nuclear magnetic resonance line was later wound down. Acquisitions such as Varian in 2010, Dako in 2012, Seahorse Bioscience, Lasergen, BioTek in 2021 and Resolution Bioscience broadened the biology, diagnostics and cell-analysis franchises, producing today's three-segment structure headquartered in Santa Clara, California.
Mechanically, Agilent sells capital instruments to laboratory customers — pharmaceutical and biotech firms, chemical and energy producers, food and environmental testers, clinical diagnostic labs and academic institutions — through a mix of direct sales, distributors and instrument-tied service contracts, with orders typically flowing as either capital projects or repeat consumables replenishment. Once an instrument is placed, the customer becomes a multi-year buyer of columns, reagents, service plans and software, which is where the CrossLab economics come from. Competitive position rests on installed-base density, workflow integration between hardware, consumables and informatics, and regulatory-grade reliability. Principal rivals include Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waters, Danaher's Beckman and SCIEX units, Bruker and Shimadzu, with the Americas, Europe and Asia — China particularly — each contributing materially to revenue.
