Acquisitions such as Varian in 2010, Dako in 2012, Seahorse Bioscience, Lasergen, BioTek in 2021 and Resolution Bioscience broadened the biology, diagnostics and cell-analysis franchises, producing today's three-segment structure headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

Mechanically, Agilent sells capital instruments to laboratory customers — pharmaceutical and biotech firms, chemical and energy producers, food and environmental testers, clinical diagnostic labs and academic institutions — through a mix of direct sales, distributors and instrument-tied service contracts, with orders typically flowing as either capital projects or repeat consumables replenishment. Once an instrument is placed, the customer becomes a multi-year buyer of columns, reagents, service plans and software, which is where the CrossLab economics come from. Competitive position rests on installed-base density, workflow integration between hardware, consumables and informatics, and regulatory-grade reliability. Principal rivals include Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waters, Danaher's Beckman and SCIEX units, Bruker and Shimadzu, with the Americas, Europe and Asia — China particularly — each contributing materially to revenue.
