How to Read Korean DART Filings in English: A Guide for Foreign Investors

Last updated: July 31, 2026

TL;DR - DART is Korea's primary regulatory disclosure database — KOSPI and KOSDAQ companies must file periodic reports and material-event disclosures here under the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act (FISCMA) - English portal: englishdart.fss.or.kr — free, no account required for browsing - Five essential filing types: 사업보고서 (annual), 반기보고서 (semi-annual), 분기보고서 (quarterly), 주요사항보고서 (material events), 대량보유상황보고서 (5%+ ownership changes) - English translations exist for large-cap KOSPI companies; most KOSDAQ filings are Korean-only — plan accordingly

What Is DART?

DART (Data Analysis, Retrieval and Transfer System) is the electronic disclosure platform operated by South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS). It serves as Korea's primary regulatory filing repository for FISCMA-mandated disclosures, broadly comparable in function to the U.S. SEC's EDGAR system.

When a Korean listed company files a periodic report or material-event disclosure, that document is submitted through DART and simultaneously transmitted to the FSS, the Financial Services Commission (FSC), and the Korea Exchange (KRX). Exchange-specific disclosures — real-time trading halts, fair-disclosure filings — flow through KRX's separate KIND system (kind.krx.co.kr); DART covers the broader universe of regulatory filings under FISCMA.

Every listed company on KOSPI and KOSDAQ — approximately 2,650 issuers as of 2026 — is required to file periodic and event-driven reports through DART. KONEX companies file annual reports through DART but are generally exempt from the quarterly and semi-annual reporting obligation that applies to KOSPI and KOSDAQ.

The FSS launched englishdart.fss.or.kr in July 2023 as a revamped English interface, and the FSC has rolled out mandatory English disclosure in phases since January 2024. As of May 2026 (Phase 2), KOSPI companies with assets of ₩2 trillion or more — approximately 265 companies — must file all major disclosure items in English, simultaneously with the Korean filing for the largest firms (assets ≥ ₩10 trillion). Smaller companies translate on a voluntary basis. Phase 3 (2028) is expected to extend the obligation to all 848 KOSPI-listed issuers.

Legal note: English versions of DART filings carry no legal effect and may not fully correspond to the Korean originals. If there is any discrepancy, the Korean version prevails. For investment decisions, verify against the Korean source when stakes are high.
