About Salesforce
Salesforce, Inc. is an enterprise software company built around cloud-based customer relationship management. Its platform is organized into a set of interlocking clouds — Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, which remain the historical core, alongside Marketing and Commerce Cloud, the Data Cloud built on customer data unification, and the Platform and Other category that includes the Slack collaboration product and application development tools. The company also operates Tableau for analytics and MuleSoft for integration. Revenue is overwhelmingly subscription and support, with a smaller professional services line. The two original CRM franchises, Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, are the most mature and profitable pillars, while newer categories carry higher growth rates but thinner contribution to segment operating profit.
Serious holders track the durability of subscription growth against a maturing installed base, the pace at which artificial intelligence features such as the Agentforce platform translate into measurable seat or consumption uplift, and management's discipline on operating margin after a period of activist pressure that reshaped capital allocation toward buybacks and a dividend. Governance points of interest include the combined chair and chief executive role held by the founder, the composition of the board following settlements with multiple activist investors, and stock-based compensation intensity. The business is a large-cap component of major U.S. equity indices, cyclically exposed to enterprise IT budgets, and subject to data-protection and cross-border transfer regulation in every jurisdiction it serves.
Salesforce was founded in 1999 in San Francisco by Marc Benioff, Parker Harris, Dave Moellenhoff and Frank Dominguez, pioneering the delivery of business software over the internet under the slogan "No Software." It went public in 2004 and grew through a long sequence of acquisitions that expanded it beyond sales automation: ExactTarget in 2013 anchored the marketing cloud, Demandware in 2016 became commerce, Tableau in 2019 added analytics, MuleSoft in 2018 added integration, and Slack in 2021 added collaboration for roughly its largest deal to date. The company operates as a single reportable segment under a founder-led management team, headquartered at Salesforce Tower in San Francisco.
Customers span from small businesses to the largest global enterprises and public-sector bodies, with financial services, technology, manufacturing, retail and healthcare among the most heavily represented verticals. Sales are made through a direct enterprise field force complemented by a self-serve motion for smaller accounts and a consulting-partner ecosystem that implements the platform. Contracts are typically multi-year subscriptions billed annually in advance, which produces the deferred revenue and remaining performance obligation balances investors monitor. Competitive position rests on the depth of the incumbent data footprint, the AppExchange partner network, and platform extensibility. Chief rivals include Microsoft's Dynamics 365 franchise, Oracle, SAP, Adobe in marketing, and HubSpot at the smaller end; the Americas generate the majority of revenue, with Europe and Asia Pacific the remainder.
