關於CSX

CSX Corporation operates one of the two dominant freight railroads in the eastern United States, running a network of roughly twenty thousand route miles spanning twenty-three states east of the Mississippi, the District of Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, with service to major Atlantic and Gulf ports. Revenue is generated by hauling merchandise carloads, intermodal containers, and bulk commodities. Merchandise—chemicals, agricultural and food products, automotive, forest products, metals, and minerals—typically contributes the largest share of revenue and the bulk of profit, while coal, though a declining share of volume over the long arc, remains disproportionately profitable per unit. Intermodal provides volume and network density but generally carries thinner margins than carload traffic.

Serious holders track the operating ratio, since incremental efficiency in a network business flows heavily to earnings, alongside pricing versus inflation, volume trends by commodity mix, and service metrics such as train velocity, dwell, and on-time originations that the Surface Transportation Board publishes. Regulatory exposure is substantial: the STB oversees rates, service, and merger review, while safety falls under the Federal Railroad Administration, and unionized labor is governed by the Railway Labor Act. Capital allocation has favored disciplined reinvestment in the network alongside consistent buybacks and a growing dividend. Cyclicality tied to industrial production, housing, autos, and export coal is a durable structural feature.

CSX traces its lineage to the Baltimore and Ohio, chartered in 1827 as the first common-carrier railroad in the United States, and to other historic eastern systems including the Chesapeake and Ohio, Seaboard, and Atlantic Coast Line. The modern holding company was formed in 1980 through the merger of the Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries. Through the 1980s and 1990s it divested non-rail businesses, including its container-shipping arm Sea-Land, and in 1999 it acquired roughly half of Conrail jointly with Norfolk Southern, giving CSX the former New York Central routes into the Northeast. Its principal operating subsidiary is CSX Transportation, and the parent is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Customers are industrial shippers, utilities, agricultural producers, automakers, and intermodal partners including ocean carriers and domestic truckload and parcel companies that hand off long-haul containers. Pricing blends contract book business, often multi-year with fuel surcharges and escalators, with shorter tariff pricing. Competitive position rests on the network itself—dense route structure, terminal footprint, port access, and interchange with western Class I carriers—reinforced by the high fixed costs and regulatory barriers that make new entry effectively impossible. Its principal rival east of the Mississippi is Norfolk Southern, with trucking the ever-present alternative on shorter lanes. Revenue is overwhelmingly domestic, though export commodities moving through eastern ports are a meaningful contributor.
