關於Costco Wholesale

Costco Wholesale operates a chain of membership-only warehouse clubs selling a curated selection of grocery, fresh food, household goods, apparel, electronics, and ancillary services such as gasoline, pharmacy, optical, hearing aids, and travel. The company deliberately stocks a narrow assortment of roughly a few thousand stock-keeping units per warehouse, compared with tens of thousands at conventional supermarkets, using scale on each item to negotiate low unit costs. Merchandise is sold at thin gross margins, and the bulk of operating profit is generated by annual membership fees paid by Gold Star consumer and Business members. Kirkland Signature, the private-label brand introduced in the 1990s, accounts for a substantial share of sales across categories.

Serious holders track membership renewal rates, paid household growth, and the cadence of membership-fee increases, since the fee stream carries the economics. Traffic and average ticket at existing warehouses, gasoline gallons sold, and the mix shift toward fresh food and e-commerce are watched as underlying demand signals. Structural questions include exposure to imported goods and tariffs, food and wage inflation passed through low sticker prices, the concentration risk of large suppliers for private label, and capital allocation between warehouse openings, dividends including periodic special dividends, and modest buybacks. Governance features include a long-tenured board culture emphasizing employee wages and low markups, and index weight within large-cap consumer staples and retail benchmarks.

Costco traces its lineage to Sol Price's Price Club, founded in San Diego in 1976, which pioneered the membership warehouse format for small businesses. Costco itself was founded in Seattle in 1983 by Jim Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman, opening its first warehouse in Kirkland, Washington. The two companies merged in 1993 to form Price/Costco, and the combined firm was later renamed Costco Companies and then Costco Wholesale Corporation, adopting its current corporate identity in the late 1990s. The Price family interests were subsequently spun off as PriceSmart, which operates warehouse clubs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Costco is incorporated in Washington State and its common stock trades on Nasdaq.

Costco sells to individual consumers and small businesses who pay an annual fee to shop at its warehouses and on Costco.com, with the paid-member relationship functioning as the core contract. Warehouses are large, low-fixture buildings sited on owned real estate where feasible, stocked from a compact supply chain in which buyers commit large volumes to a limited vendor list in exchange for aggressive pricing. Competitive position rests on this scale-for-price bargain, high inventory turnover relative to peers, and disciplined markup caps on both branded and Kirkland goods. Its principal rivals are Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, and BJ's Wholesale, with the United States and Canada generating the majority of revenue and a growing international footprint across Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and continental Europe.
