關於Caterpillar
Caterpillar Inc. designs, manufactures and markets heavy machinery, engines and industrial power systems sold under the Cat brand and a family of associated marques. The business is organized around three primary industrial segments: Construction Industries, which supplies excavators, wheel loaders, backhoes and compact equipment to contractors, housing and infrastructure builders; Resource Industries, which serves mining, quarrying and heavy construction with large trucks, shovels and underground gear; and Energy & Transportation, which produces reciprocating and turbine engines, generator sets, and locomotives for oil and gas, power generation, marine and rail customers. A separate Financial Products arm provides retail and wholesale financing. Energy & Transportation and Construction Industries typically contribute the bulk of operating profit.
Serious holders track the cyclicality of the end markets Caterpillar serves, which tie earnings to global construction activity, commodity capital expenditure cycles and infrastructure spending. Dealer inventory changes are watched closely because reported sales to end users can diverge sharply from sales to the independent dealer network. Investors monitor exposure to mining capex, oil and gas engine demand, and the pace of data-center power orders, alongside the health of the Cat Financial receivables book. Governance features include a long-standing capital-return framework built on dividend growth and buybacks, disciplined pricing during downturns, and material pension and warranty obligations. Tariff exposure, steel input costs and foreign-currency translation are recurring structural questions.
The company was founded in 1925 through the merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company, both California builders of tracked crawlers whose "caterpillar" tread had transformed farm and battlefield mobility. It grew rapidly during the mid-twentieth century by supplying earthmoving equipment for highway construction, dam building and postwar reconstruction, and moved its headquarters from Peoria, Illinois to the Chicago area in the 2010s before relocating to Irving, Texas. Landmark transactions include the 1998 acquisition of Perkins Engines, the 2011 purchase of mining-equipment maker Bucyrus International, and the 2011 acquisition of locomotive builder Electro-Motive Diesel, which together broadened its energy and resource footprints.
Caterpillar sells overwhelmingly through a global network of independent dealers who take title to machines, finance customer purchases through Cat Financial, and generate the aftermarket parts and service revenue that stabilizes earnings between capital cycles. Customers range from small contractors buying a single compact loader to integrated miners ordering fleets of ultra-class haul trucks, utilities specifying prime-power gensets, and oil-and-gas operators buying reciprocating engines for pressure pumping and gas compression. Competitive position rests on installed-base scale, dealer coverage, product durability and parts availability, set against Komatsu in earthmoving and mining, Deere and CNH in construction, and Cummins, Wärtsilä and GE-derived brands in engines. Sales outside North America account for roughly half of revenue.
