Korea Investment Holdings (071050.KS) Q1 2026: Net Profit Doubles to ₩916.7B as KOSPI 5,000 Rally Explodes Trading and Fee Income

Every market-sensitive revenue line fired simultaneously — but a profit base built on mark-to-market gains and transaction fees is only as durable as the bull run itself.

Source: Q1 2026 Quarterly Report (분기보고서) — Filed May 15, 2026 with DART | Consolidated Financial Statements | Balance sheet in ₩ trillions; income statement in ₩ billions

Korea Investment Holdings posted consolidated net profit of ₩916.7 billion in Q1 2026, a 99.6% year-on-year surge from ₩459.3 billion in Q1 2025 — the most decisive single quarter in the group's recent history and a direct consequence of KOSPI's 838-point advance to 5,052.46 at period end. Operating profit rose 108.9% to ₩1,106.3 billion, with financial asset valuation and disposal gains accounting for the single largest increment: ₩391.8 billion versus ₩85.8 billion a year earlier, a 4.5-fold increase that alone explains more than half of the ₩576.7 billion year-on-year operating profit swing. Net commission income nearly doubled to ₩621.5 billion as surging trading volumes lifted brokerage, financial product sales, and IB fee lines in tandem. The central analytical question this quarter — whether Korea Investment & Securities' operating margins had genuinely recovered — is answered emphatically in the affirmative; whether the recovery is durable is the separate, more sobering question.

Balance Sheet

Asset Expansion Driven by the Trading Book and Loan Portfolio

Consolidated total assets reached ₩148.01 trillion at March 31, 2026, up ₩11.85 trillion (+8.7%) from year-end 2025 and up 35.5% from year-end 2024 — a striking pace of balance sheet expansion over fifteen months.

IMA assets (종합투자계좌)1.112.57+130.6%
Total assets109.22136.16148.01+8.7%

The two structural pillars of balance sheet growth are the proprietary trading and hedging book (FVTPL assets: ₩62.63T → ₩83.18T over fifteen months) and the corporate lending and fixed income portfolio (amortized cost assets: ₩25.09T → ₩32.48T). Both grew in a synchronized bull-market environment, creating a balance sheet that is mechanically leveraged to equity market direction: when KOSPI advances, unrealized gains on the FVTPL book feed directly into the income statement; when it reverses, the same transmission runs in the opposite direction with equal speed.

The most striking single-quarter move was in IMA (Integrated Management Account, 종합투자계좌) assets, which more than doubled from ₩1.11 trillion at year-end to ₩2.57 trillion — a 130.6% increase in three months. Korea Investment & Securities' comprehensive financial investment business license is now generating meaningful asset volumes, establishing a new funding and deployment channel alongside the traditional brokerage and lending book. FVOCI assets rose 60.7% to ₩4.88 trillion and derivative assets surged 54.5% to ₩3.51 trillion, consistent with elevated market activity and expanded hedging demand across the trading book.

Liability Structure: Borrowings and Customer Deposits Move in Lock-Step

ItemDec 2024 (₩T)Dec 2025 (₩T)Mar 2026 (₩T)QoQ
Customer deposits (예수부채)16.1419.8121.82+10.2%

Other financial liabilities6.258.9111.61+30.3%
Total liabilities99.49124.06135.15+8.9%

Borrowings at ₩76.15 trillion represent more than half of total funding. The 10.2% single-quarter increase in customer deposits — from ₩19.81 trillion to ₩21.82 trillion — reflects retail money flowing into securities accounts as the bull market drew in new participation. The composition of borrowings shifted materially on a standalone basis: corporate bond issuance as a share of average funding fell from 17.30% in FY2024 to 3.47% in Q1 2026, while other short-term borrowings expanded from 14.89% to 35.17%. The firm is deliberately reducing long-term bond dependency in favor of shorter-duration instruments — a strategy that reduces average funding costs in normal conditions but increases rollover frequency and refinancing exposure when market access tightens.

Capital: Retained Earnings Reach ₩10.68 Trillion

Total equity has grown steadily — from ₩9.73 trillion at end-2024 to ₩12.86 trillion at end of Q1 2026 — with retained earnings as the primary engine, rising from ₩8.04 trillion to ₩10.68 trillion over the same span. Hybrid capital securities increased from ₩500 billion to ₩700 billion during the quarter, reinforcing the capital stack. Capital surplus declined from ₩610 billion to ₩180 billion between year-ends, reflecting an internal capital reorganization rather than any deterioration in quality. AOCI expanded as unrealized gains on FVOCI equity and debt instruments widened with the rising market.

Consolidated leverage — total assets divided by total equity — edged up to approximately 11.5x from 11.2x at end-2024 and 11.3x at end-2025, signaling that asset growth slightly outpaced capital accumulation. The direction is modest but bears watching as the firm continues to expand its trading book and IMA business.

Proprietary Trading as the Dominant Profit Driver

Financial asset valuation and disposal gains — the line capturing mark-to-market movements on the proprietary trading book — rose from ₩85.8 billion to ₩391.8 billion, a 4.5-fold increase that contributed more than half of the ₩576.7 billion year-on-year operating profit gain. The transmission mechanism is direct: KOSPI's 838-point advance to 5,052.46 during the quarter inflated the fair value of a larger-than-ever trading book, with gains flowing straight to the income statement. The concentration of earnings impact in a single line item — one that is entirely dependent on market direction and portfolio mark — is the most important risk characteristic of this quarter's results.

Fee Income Momentum

Net commission income of ₩621.5 billion, up 86.9%, is the second structural driver and carries meaningfully higher quality than trading gains: fee revenues compress as volumes slow but do not mechanically reverse the way mark-to-market lines do. The increase reflects three converging forces — higher brokerage commissions on surging turnover, expanded financial product sales fees as retail investors stepped up product purchases, and IB fee growth. Korea Investment & Securities on a standalone basis recorded operating profit of ₩824.0 billion and net profit of ₩624.0 billion in Q1 2026 — approximately two-thirds of the group's consolidated net profit delivered by a single subsidiary. This confirms that the securities arm's margin recovery is both real and substantial, not merely a consolidation artifact.

Interest Income, Foreign Exchange, and Cost Structure

Net interest income grew 22.1% to ₩432.0 billion, reflecting the expanded lending and fixed income portfolio. As the most structurally stable revenue component, its steady compounding provides a partial anchor against the volatility of the trading book. Offsetting this, foreign exchange transaction gains collapsed from ₩66.3 billion to ₩4.9 billion — a dramatic contraction that highlights how comprehensively the quarter's incremental profitability was generated by market-sensitive rather than structural sources.

SG&A expenses rose 28.5% to ₩462.9 billion. The cost base is largely fixed — compensation, technology, compliance, and infrastructure do not scale down quickly when revenues contract — which means the operating leverage effect that amplified profits in Q1 2026 will operate symmetrically to the downside in an adverse market environment. For now, however, the revenue surge overwhelmed cost growth by a wide margin.

Return Quality and Cycle Positioning

Full-year FY2025 ROE on attributable equity was approximately 18.7% (attributable net profit ₩2.02 trillion ÷ average attributable equity ~₩10.83 trillion). Annualizing Q1 2026 net profit of ₩914.9 billion implies an ROE approaching 29% — a number to be read as a cyclical peak metric rather than a sustainable run-rate. Mark-to-market gains that drove this performance reverse in a single adverse quarter with no cash recovery. The analytically relevant question is how far current earnings sit above a normalized through-cycle baseline, and the FY2025 full-year ROE of ~18.7% is a far better approximation of that baseline than any Q1 2026 annualization.

Cash Flow

ItemQ1 2026 (₩T)
Operating cash flow-2.38
Investing cash flow-1.71
Financing cash flow+3.95
Ending cash and equivalents3.15

The negative operating cash flow of ₩2.38 trillion requires careful interpretation in the context of a securities holding company. It does not reflect operational distress — consolidated net profit for the quarter was ₩916.7 billion. Rather, the trading and lending assets that constitute a securities firm's working capital expanded by a net ₩2.88 trillion during the quarter, absorbing cash as the firm grew its positions. Profitable growth in a securities business routinely produces negative operating cash flow in direct proportion to balance sheet expansion.

Financing activities generated ₩3.95 trillion: ₩3.24 trillion of new borrowings, ₩1.00 trillion of corporate bond issuance net of ₩570 billion in repayments, and ₩210 billion of hybrid capital securities. These proceeds funded the asset expansion captured in operating outflows and the ₩1.71 trillion of investing outflows. Dividends paid during the quarter were a modest ₩5.5 billion, consistent with the group's preference for capital retention over distribution at this stage of expansion.

Conventional free cash flow metrics carry no analytical weight here. The relevant measures of financial health for a securities holding company are capital adequacy ratios, funding mix stability, and the quality of liquid assets backing short-term obligations — all of which remain robust.

Key Findings

Capital Adequacy Is Exceptionally Strong Across the Group

The holding company's equity-to-required-capital ratio stands at 136.80% (down marginally from 138.98% at year-end 2025), comfortably above the 100% regulatory minimum. Korea Investment & Securities' net capital ratio (NCR) surged from 2,929% to 3,756% — providing loss-absorption capacity that vastly exceeds any plausible near-term stress scenario (minimum threshold: 100%). Korea Investment Savings Bank improved its BIS capital ratio from 17.14% to 18.54%. The group enters any potential market correction with its regulated subsidiaries carrying extensive regulatory headroom, which affords management flexibility in capital allocation without imminent risk of supervisory constraint.

IMA Business Is Scaling Faster Than Expected

The IMA asset base more than doubled in a single quarter to ₩2.57 trillion. This business — enabled by Korea Investment & Securities' designation as a comprehensive financial investment firm — combines proprietary deployment of customer-entrusted capital with a fee overlay, expanding both the revenue pool and the risk exposure surface. Its rapid early growth makes it one of the most important medium-term variables in the group's earnings model, and its eventual normalized contribution will depend on whether the asset management capability behind it can generate returns that justify the capital commitment.

Asset Management and VC Subsidiaries Delivered Disproportionate Returns

Korea Investment Value Asset Management posted Q1 2026 net profit of ₩119.7 billion — more than half its full-year FY2024 profit of ₩204.7 billion delivered in a single quarter, almost certainly reflecting mark-to-market appreciation on its value equity portfolio in the rising market. Korea Investment Trust Management grew AUM to ₩86.4 trillion from ₩81.4 trillion at year-end, with ETF AUM reaching ₩28.7 trillion. Korea Investment Partners (VC arm) returned to profitability at ₩5.6 billion versus an FY2024 loss of ₩28.4 billion, reflecting a more supportive environment for venture portfolio valuations. Korea Investment Accelerator remained marginally loss-making at -₩340 million. The AUM and mark-to-market components of subsidiary profit are subject to the same cyclical risk as the parent's trading book.

Real Estate PF Stress Is Accumulating in Korea Investment Capital

Korea Investment Capital's non-performing loan ratio rose from 4.91% at year-end 2025 to 6.33% at Q1 2026. Its delinquency rate increased from 5.51% to 7.35% over the same period. These moves represent a 142 basis point and 184 basis point deterioration respectively in a single quarter — against an operating asset base of ₩6.11 trillion concentrated in corporate lending with real estate project finance as a meaningful component. Korea Investment Real Estate Trust faces separate, contingent liability exposure from type-A and responsible-completion land trust projects, including potential damage claims on projects that missed statutory completion deadlines. The Korean housing market backdrop — regional oversupply, elevated construction costs, and ongoing stress in the PF market — has not yet provided a catalyst for credit quality improvement, and an extended deterioration cycle could impose material earnings drag across both subsidiaries.

Global IB Expansion Diversifies Revenue but Introduces Jurisdictional Complexity

Active overseas buildout through KIS US (acquisition finance), SF Credit Partners (Stifel joint venture), KIS Asia (Hong Kong DCM), and KIS Vietnam and Indonesia positions the group to capture cross-border capital flow that the domestic market cannot offer. Equity-capital-backed overseas acquisition finance is a higher-margin activity than domestic brokerage but introduces credit and market risk exposure across multiple regulatory regimes simultaneously — a structural complexity that grows as the international footprint expands.

Outlook

The bull case for Korea Investment Holdings is grounded in durable structural advantages reinforced by a favorable cyclical environment. The Korea Investment & Securities franchise holds leading retail brokerage market share and an IB platform with both domestic and cross-border origination capability. The diversified subsidiary ecosystem — spanning asset management, savings banking, capital finance, real estate trust, and VC — provides meaningful income smoothing across idiosyncratic shocks to any individual business. The IMA business represents a genuine structural growth option that was not present two years ago. And with KOSPI above 5,000, retail participation elevated, and risk appetite high, the near-term environment remains supportive of all three core revenue drivers.

The risks are the mirror image of these strengths. Proprietary trading gains and commission income are both pro-cyclical: they amplify earnings in rising markets and compress sharply in falling ones. Of the ₩576.7 billion year-on-year increase in Q1 operating profit, more than half originated from a mark-to-market line with zero cash conversion — a line that reverses in full when the market turns. Korea Investment Capital's NPL and delinquency ratios are rising at a pace that suggests the real estate credit cycle is still deteriorating rather than troughing, and the responsible-completion trust exposure in the real estate trust subsidiary constitutes a contingent liability difficult to quantify from public filings alone. The shift toward shorter-duration funding reduces bond costs but creates rollover dependency in periods of market stress.

Capital allocation is currently in aggressive expansion mode: ₩3.95 trillion raised through borrowings, bonds, and hybrid capital in a single quarter to fuel the trading book, the loan portfolio, and the IMA business. The retained earnings base is strong (₩10.68 trillion), regulatory capital ratios are high, and the payout to shareholders remains modest — all of which afford management the optionality to sustain this pace. The relevant watch variable is whether leverage expansion continues to outrun capital accumulation; the current trajectory is still manageable, but the direction warrants monitoring at each quarterly filing.

The securities industry cycle appears to be near a local peak. Continued market strength could sustain trading and fee income through the remainder of 2026; a re-rating of Korean equities, deteriorating macro conditions, or a catalyst that drains retail trading volumes would expose the gap between current earnings and structural earnings with considerable speed. The FY2025 full-year ROE of approximately 18.7% — earned through a calendar year of more normal market conditions — is the better reference point for normalized profitability than the ₩916.7 billion single-quarter result.
