Samsung Biologics CEO Reaffirms 15-20% Growth Target at BIO USA 2026, Advances Rockville Ramp and Netherlands Hub

Samsung Biologics Co. (KRX: 207940) used its 14th consecutive appearance at the 2026 BIO International Convention (BIO USA) in San Diego to unveil a three-pillar global expansion roadmap, with CEO John Rim reaffirming an unchanged 15-20% annual revenue growth target even as the company acknowledged U.S. manufacturing costs run roughly double those in South Korea.

The three pillars are the integration of the newly acquired Rockville, Maryland facility; a final investment decision on Songdo's Plant 6 by year-end; and the opening of a Netherlands sales hub in Q3 2026. Together, they are designed to lift Samsung Biologics' global CDMO capacity toward 1.325 million liters at the Songdo Second Bio Campus alone by 2032.

Rockville Integration On Track

Samsung Biologics completed the USD 280 million acquisition of GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Rockville facility on March 31, 2026. The two-plant campus carries 60,000 liters of cGMP biologics capacity and retained 520 GSK employees.

Rim described the deal as "a very good decision" at BIO USA, while noting the cost reality: "U.S. production costs are approximately double Korea's levels." The tradeoff is proximity to American pharmaceutical buyers seeking supply-chain diversification.

Sample batch shipments out of Rockville began in Q2 2026, with full commercial production targeted for Q3 2026. The company is simultaneously reviewing a 40,000-liter capacity expansion at the site, which would lift U.S.-only output to 100,000 liters.

Jeff Mason, VP of Samsung Biologics' New Jersey sales office, told BIO USA attendees: "Big pharma continues to outsource — both legacy product batches and new pipeline assets. We see consistent demand despite reshoring pressure." He added that Samsung's Songdo-based platform standardization compresses tech transfer timelines to approximately 90 days within the campus.

Plant 6 and the 2032 Capacity Map

Samsung Biologics' Songdo campus currently runs Plants 1-5 at a combined 785,000 liters. Combined with Rockville, the global capacity stands at 845,000 liters — the largest of any CDMO globally.

A decision on Plant 6 construction is expected by end-2026. All future plants are standardized at 180,000 liters per facility. Under the full buildout of Plants 6, 7, and 8 on Songdo's Second Bio Campus, domestic capacity could reach 1.325 million liters by approximately 2032.

Rim also indicated that GLP-1 peptides, AAV gene therapies, and cell/gene therapies are under evaluation as next-generation modalities for a potential third campus beyond Songdo.

Netherlands Hub Closes the Geographic Loop

A sales office opening in Amsterdam in Q3 2026 will complete Samsung Biologics' geographic coverage of approximately 90% of the global pharmaceutical market: North America (52%), Europe (20%), and Asia-Pacific (19%). The company already operates offices in New Jersey (2023) and Tokyo (2025).

Rim cited the Netherlands as optimal for European hub positioning, given its logistics infrastructure and existing pharma cluster, shortening response cycles for clients reshaping supply agreements under geopolitical pressure.

Demand Signal: 460 Pre-Scheduled Meetings

Samsung Biologics entered BIO USA 2026 with 460 pre-scheduled buyer meetings, reflecting sustained client demand even amid uneven biotech financing conditions. The company also announced its third Samsung Life Sciences Fund at KRW 200 billion (approximately USD 145 million), supplementing existing funds of KRW 170 billion and KRW 72 billion dedicated to strategic technology partnerships.
