Lam Researchについて
Lam Research Corporation designs, manufactures, markets, and services wafer fabrication equipment used by semiconductor manufacturers to build integrated circuits. Its portfolio centers on deposition systems, plasma etch systems, and photoresist processing and cleaning tools, with etch and deposition together forming the core of its franchise. End markets span memory (both DRAM and NAND), foundry, and logic customers, though memory has historically represented a larger share of Lam's mix than at its main peers. Alongside equipment sales, the company runs a substantial Customer Support Business Group covering spares, upgrades, service, and refurbished tools, which typically grows with the installed base and provides a steadier profit contribution than volatile new-system shipments.
Serious holders watch customer concentration, since a handful of leading memory and foundry manufacturers account for the majority of revenue and their capital-expenditure cycles drive Lam's top line. Exposure to China, both as an end market and as a target of U.S. export controls on advanced wafer equipment, is a durable structural question, as are reciprocal rules from allied jurisdictions. Cyclicality of the memory sector, technology transitions such as gate-all-around logic and high-aspect-ratio 3D NAND, and share dynamics against Applied Materials and Tokyo Electron matter for the long-term earnings power. Capital allocation is buyback-heavy with a growing dividend, and the company is a component of the S&P 500 and major semiconductor indexes.
Lam was founded in 1980 by David K. Lam in Silicon Valley to commercialize plasma etch technology, went public in 1984, and progressively broadened from a pure etch specialist into a deposition and clean supplier through internal development and acquisitions, including Silfex, SEZ (which became the clean products group), and Novellus Systems in 2012, a transformational combination that added dielectric and metal deposition. An attempted merger with KLA-Tencor was terminated in 2016 after regulatory objections. The company is incorporated in Delaware, headquartered in Fremont, California, with major operations in Tualatin, Oregon, and in 2024 completed a ten-for-one stock split. Timothy Archer serves as chief executive officer.
Revenue is generated primarily from selling capital equipment to a concentrated set of leading-edge chipmakers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, TSMC, and Intel, under multi-quarter purchase relationships tied to their fab build-out plans, supplemented by the recurring Customer Support Business Group stream that scales with the installed tool base. Competitive position rests on process leadership in conductor and dielectric etch and in specialty deposition steps critical to advanced 3D NAND, DRAM scaling, and gate-all-around logic, where Lam competes principally with Applied Materials and Tokyo Electron and, in narrower niches, with Hitachi High-Tech and ASM International. Geographically, the majority of revenue is shipped to customers in Asia, with China, Korea, and Taiwan the largest destinations.
