Applied Materialsについて

Applied Materials is the world's largest supplier of equipment, services and software used to manufacture semiconductor chips, and it also supplies systems for making advanced displays. The business is organised around three reporting segments: Semiconductor Systems, which sells the deposition, etch, chemical mechanical planarization, ion implantation, thermal processing, metrology and inspection tools used in front-end wafer fabrication; Applied Global Services, which sells spare parts, upgrades and outsourced maintenance to the installed base; and Display and Adjacent Markets, which supplies equipment for OLED and other display panels. Semiconductor Systems generates the majority of revenue and typically drives the bulk of operating profit, while Applied Global Services contributes a smaller but structurally more stable earnings stream.

Investors track the deep customer concentration inherent to a wafer-fab-equipment vendor, since a handful of leading-edge logic and memory manufacturers account for a large share of orders. U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductor tools sold into China are a durable regulatory overhang, given that Chinese fabs have historically been a meaningful customer group. Cyclicality of memory capital spending, competition with Lam Research, KLA and ASML across adjacent process steps, and the pace of transitions to gate-all-around transistors, advanced packaging and backside power delivery shape the multi-year revenue trajectory. Capital allocation leans heavily on buybacks and a steadily raised dividend, and the company is a component of the S&P 500 and PHLX Semiconductor Index.

Applied Materials was founded in 1967 in Silicon Valley and went public in 1972, initially as a supplier of chemical vapor deposition systems. Under a long tenure led by James C. Morgan beginning in the late 1970s, it expanded internationally, opened a large presence in Japan and became the broadest-line wafer fab equipment vendor through both organic development and acquisitions, including Opal and Orbot in metrology, Etec Systems in mask writing, and later Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates in ion implantation in 2011. A proposed 2013 combination with Tokyo Electron was abandoned in 2015 after U.S. antitrust objections. The company remains headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and reports on a fiscal year ending in late October.

Customers are the world's chipmakers, dominated by a small set of leading-edge logic foundries, integrated device manufacturers and memory producers, with the balance made up of specialty and mature-node fabs plus display panel makers. Sales of new systems are typically project-based, tied to specific fab build-outs and technology-node transitions, and often move with long lead times and multi-quarter backlogs; the services arm layers on recurring subscription-style agreements against the installed base. Competitive position rests on breadth of process coverage, materials-engineering know-how across deposition and etch, and co-development relationships with customers on next-generation nodes. The overwhelming majority of revenue is generated outside the United States, with Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan the largest geographies.
