Allstateについて
Allstate Corporation is one of the largest publicly held personal-lines insurers in the United States, best known for its auto and homeowners policies sold under the Allstate brand and, at lower price points, under Esurance and the direct-response National General and Answer Financial channels. The Allstate Protection segment, which writes personal auto, homeowners, renters, condominium, and other personal property coverage, accounts for the overwhelming majority of premiums and is the dominant driver of underwriting profit in normal years. Smaller segments include Protection Services, which sells extended vehicle service contracts, identity protection, and consumer product protection plans, and Allstate Health and Benefits, which offers voluntary employer-based supplemental coverage. Investment income on the float portfolio provides a secondary but meaningful earnings stream.
Investors track the combined ratio in personal auto and homeowners as the central operating metric, since a few points of loss ratio move earnings materially. Catastrophe exposure, particularly to Gulf and Southeast hurricanes, California wildfires, and Midwestern convective storms, is a structural feature rather than a tail risk, and reinsurance program design matters. Rate adequacy depends on approval by fifty separate state insurance departments, so regulatory pace in California, New York, New Jersey, and Florida is closely watched. Capital returns have historically emphasized buybacks alongside a steadily raised dividend. Holders also monitor reserve development, the mix shift toward direct distribution, and the pace at which the transformative growth plan converts into policy-in-force growth.
Allstate traces its origins to 1931, when Sears, Roebuck and Company launched it as a mail-order auto insurance venture named after a Sears tire brand. It expanded into a full personal-lines carrier through the mid-twentieth century and was partially floated in 1993 before Sears fully spun it off to shareholders in 1995, making it an independent company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. Subsequent transformations included the 1999 acquisition of CNA's personal lines business, the 2011 purchase of Esurance and Answer Financial from White Mountains, the 2021 acquisition of National General Holdings for roughly four billion dollars, and the divestiture of the Allstate Life Insurance Company business to Blackstone-affiliated entities completed in 2021 and 2022.
Customers are individual households buying annually renewable policies, sold through three broad channels: the captive Allstate exclusive agency network, independent agents writing under Encompass and National General, and direct-to-consumer online and call-center distribution. Pricing rests on sophisticated segmentation using telematics, credit-based insurance scores where permitted, and property characteristics, with each state filed rate plan approved independently. The competitive set in personal auto is concentrated: State Farm holds the largest share, followed by Progressive, GEICO, and Allstate, with USAA serving military households; homeowners is more fragmented but similarly dominated by the same national carriers. Revenue is overwhelmingly domestic, with only limited Canadian operations and minimal exposure elsewhere.
