Hyundai GF Holdings (005440.KS) Q1 2026: Operating Profit Surges 24% as Equity-Method Collapse Cuts Controlling-Shareholder Net Income 47%
Core subsidiary operations delivered their sharpest quarterly improvement in years, but a ₩78.8 billion year-on-year collapse in equity-method income from affiliated associates — primarily department store affiliates — sliced controlling-shareholder net profit nearly in half, revealing the dual arithmetic of a diversified holding structure.

Hyundai GF Holdings, the consumer-goods holding company anchoring the Hyundai Department Store Group's non-retail cluster, posted consolidated operating profit of ₩117.6 billion in Q1 2026 — a 23.9% jump from ₩94.9 billion a year earlier — driven by cost discipline that converted a 0.6% revenue gain into meaningful operating leverage and lifted the operating margin to 5.64% from 4.58%. That trajectory is consistent with FY2025's full-year record, when operating profit expanded 38.4% to ₩274.1 billion. Yet the headline commanding investor attention is a 47.3% collapse in controlling-shareholder net income to ₩90.9 billion from ₩172.7 billion, a swing attributable almost entirely to equity-method income from affiliated companies contracting from ₩139.1 billion to ₩60.3 billion — a ₩78.8 billion deterioration no amount of operational efficiency could offset. The company oversees 38 consolidated subsidiaries spanning food service, furniture, building materials, home shopping, apparel, and heavy equipment, and its associate investment account — principally the stake in Hyundai Department Store recognized via equity method — is the largest asset class on its balance sheet, making equity-method volatility a permanent feature of the income profile.
