About Berkshire Hathaway
Berkshire Hathaway is a Delaware-domiciled holding company that owns a sprawling group of operating subsidiaries and a large portfolio of publicly traded equity securities. Its most economically important segment is insurance, anchored by GEICO in private passenger auto and by General Re and the Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group in property-casualty and life reinsurance. Beyond insurance, the company owns BNSF Railway, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and a manufacturing, service and retailing group spanning Precision Castparts, Marmon, Lubrizol, Shaw Industries, See's Candies and dozens of smaller businesses. Revenue is diversified across insurance premiums, freight, regulated utility sales and industrial goods, but insurance underwriting combined with the investment income earned on insurance float typically drives the bulk of consolidated earnings power.
Holders track the size and cost of insurance float, underwriting discipline at GEICO relative to Progressive, and catastrophe exposure in the reinsurance book. Capital allocation is the defining governance question: the pace of share repurchases, the cash pile held in Treasury bills, the concentration of the equity portfolio in a handful of names, and the readiness to deploy tens of billions into a single acquisition. The dual-class share structure concentrates voting power, and the post-Buffett succession framework, with Greg Abel designated to run operations, is a durable focus. Regulatory oversight of BNSF by the Surface Transportation Board and of Berkshire Hathaway Energy by state utility commissions also shapes the earnings trajectory.
The company traces to a Massachusetts textile mill whose roots reach into the nineteenth century, taken over by Warren Buffett in 1965 through his investment partnership. Textiles were wound down over the following two decades as capital was redirected into insurance, beginning with the 1967 purchase of National Indemnity. GEICO was acquired in full in 1996, General Re in 1998, and BNSF in 2010, each transforming the earnings base. MidAmerican Energy, later renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy, was bought in 2000 and expanded through PacifiCorp and NV Energy. Precision Castparts joined in 2016. Today the company operates as a decentralized holding structure with a small headquarters staff in Omaha.
Revenue mechanics differ sharply across the group. GEICO writes auto policies directly to consumers, competing with State Farm, Progressive and Allstate on price and loss-ratio discipline, while the reinsurance units negotiate multi-year treaties with primary insurers worldwide. BNSF earns freight revenue hauling consumer goods, coal, agricultural products, industrial materials and intermodal containers across the western United States, competing head-to-head with Union Pacific. Berkshire Hathaway Energy sells regulated electricity and natural gas under rate structures set by state commissions. The manufacturing, service and retail businesses sell into industrial, construction and consumer end markets. Revenue is predominantly domestic, with reinsurance and certain industrial units providing the meaningful international exposure.
