Edwards Lifesciences Q2 2026: $188M California Tax Charge Cuts GAAP EPS to $0.42 While Guidance Rises

Edwards Lifesciences reported net income from continuing operations of $241.4 million for the second quarter of 2026, down 28.1% from $335.9 million a year earlier, and diluted EPS of $0.42 against $0.57 — yet the underlying business did not weaken. (Total net income a year earlier was $331.5 million, or $333.2 million attributable to Edwards after noncontrolling interests, after a $4.4 million discontinued-operations loss.) Operating income rose 24.8% to $513.2 million on sales of $1,741.0 million — 13.6% reported growth, 12.5% in constant currency — and the operating margin reached 29.5%, the widest of the three second quarters this filing presents. The entire earnings decline traces to a single line: a $188.2 million non-cash valuation allowance against deferred tax assets, triggered by California budget legislation enacted on June 29 — one day before quarter-end. Edwards also raised full-year sales guidance alongside the results, and the shares rose roughly 6%. For a structural heart device maker whose growth thesis rests on procedure volume rather than the economic cycle, the distinction between a legislated tax write-down and an operating shortfall is what the market traded on.

Unless otherwise noted, all figures come from Edwards Lifesciences' Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Guidance, product-group sales and adjusted EPS come from the company's Q2 2026 earnings release (SEC Exhibit 99.1) and earnings call.
