Hankook Tire (161390.KS) Q1 2026: Margin Hits 9.5%, Operating Profit Surges 43%

Cost deflation in oil-linked raw materials, amplified by a weaker Korean won, drove Hankook Tire's sharpest quarterly margin expansion in recent years — even as the Hanon Systems integration keeps debt elevated and net income growth lags far behind the operating-level gains.

Hankook Tire & Technology's first-quarter 2026 results made a compelling case that margin improvement does not always require revenue momentum. Consolidated revenue rose a measured 7.1% year-over-year to ₩5.31 trillion, but operating profit surged 42.9% to ₩506.9 billion, lifting the operating margin 240 basis points to 9.5% — implying a degree of operating leverage of approximately 6.1 times for the quarter. The catalyst was a favorable convergence of two externally determined variables: oil-linked raw material deflation (synthetic rubber unit costs down 3.3%, carbon black down 9.6% year-over-year) and a structurally weaker Korean won that mechanically boosted the translated earnings of overseas subsidiaries. The result, however, carries an important internal tension: net income attributable to controlling shareholders grew only 8.3% to ₩346.2 billion, as a near-doubling of the effective tax rate from 20.6% to 29.6%, a near-total collapse in equity-method investment gains, and declining financial income collectively absorbed the bulk of the operating-level windfall — leaving EPS at ₩2,838 against a headline narrative of a 43% profit surge.
