關於United Rentals
United Rentals is the largest equipment rental company in North America, operating a fleet of aerial work platforms, earthmoving equipment, material handling machines, trench safety gear, power and HVAC units, portable storage, mobile toilets, and tools that customers rent by the day, week, or month. The business is organized into a General Rentals segment covering construction and industrial customers across a broad geography, and a Specialty segment focused on trench safety, power, HVAC, fluid solutions, and mobile storage that carries structurally higher margins and has been the primary vehicle for organic growth. Equipment rental revenue drives the bulk of profit, with used equipment sales, ancillary service fees, and contractor supplies rounding out the mix.
Investors track fleet size, dollar utilization, and time utilization as the operational levers that translate construction activity into cash flow, alongside original equipment cost trends and the age profile of the rental fleet. Capital allocation is a defining feature: management runs a stated framework balancing capital expenditure on fleet, bolt-on acquisitions, share repurchases, and a dividend, and the company carries meaningful leverage that swings with the cycle. Non-residential construction spending, industrial maintenance budgets, and infrastructure legislation shape demand, while original equipment manufacturer concentration on the supply side and a heavily unionized customer base on some jobsites are durable considerations. The stock sits in the S&P 500.
The company was founded in 1997 by Bradley Jacobs, who assembled it through an aggressive roll-up of independent rental yards and took it public the same year on the New York Stock Exchange. A transformational 2012 acquisition of RSC Holdings roughly doubled its size and cemented its position as the industry leader, and subsequent deals for National Pump, NES Rentals, Neff, BlueLine, General Finance, and Ahern Rentals extended the specialty footprint and geographic reach. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, United Rentals operates hundreds of branches across the United States, Canada, and a smaller presence in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and is incorporated in Delaware.
Customers range from large industrial accounts and national contractors served under corporate agreements to local builders and municipal buyers who transact at the branch level, with the largest strategic accounts generating a disproportionate share of volume through negotiated rates and dedicated service. Contracts are typically short-duration rentals priced by time and equipment class, supplemented by delivery, fuel, and damage-waiver charges, and the fleet is refreshed continuously through disciplined disposals into a resilient used-equipment market. Scale, branch density, breadth of fleet, and digital ordering underpin its competitive position against Sunbelt Rentals, Herc Rentals, and a long tail of regional operators. The United States generates the overwhelming majority of revenue.
