關於Qualcomm

Qualcomm designs and licenses the wireless technologies that underpin most modern smartphones and a growing range of connected devices. The business splits into two economically distinct halves. QCT, the chip business, sells Snapdragon system-on-chip processors and modems to handset makers, along with silicon for automotive cockpits, advanced driver assistance, industrial IoT, PCs, and networking gear. QCL, the licensing business, collects royalties from essentially every 3G, 4G, and 5G handset sold worldwide under a portfolio of standard-essential patents. QCT generates the majority of revenue but carries semiconductor-like margins, while QCL is the smaller line by sales yet historically delivers the disproportionate share of operating profit thanks to its licensing economics.

Investors watch a handful of durable questions. Customer concentration is unusually high: a small number of Chinese handset OEMs and Apple together account for a meaningful share of chip revenue, and Apple's multi-year modem transition to an in-house design is a defining overhang. The licensing model faces recurring litigation and regulatory challenges across jurisdictions, from the FTC and EU to Korea and China. Handset volumes are cyclical and tied to global consumer sentiment. Progress in diversifying beyond phones — into automotive, PCs running on Arm-based Snapdragon X chips, and edge AI — is tracked closely, as is the capital return posture through dividends and buybacks.

Qualcomm was founded in 1985 in San Diego by Irwin Jacobs, Andrew Viterbi, and five colleagues, initially as a contract R&D shop. Its transformative bet was commercializing CDMA as a cellular standard, which by the late 1990s displaced competing technologies and seeded the royalty franchise that funds the company to this day. Qualcomm divested its handset and infrastructure manufacturing businesses in 1999 and 2000 to focus on chips and IP. A protracted attempt to acquire NXP Semiconductors was abandoned in 2018 after failing to secure Chinese regulatory clearance. Broadcom's hostile bid for Qualcomm was blocked the same year on U.S. national security grounds. The company remains headquartered in San Diego.

Mechanically, QCT sells chips directly to device manufacturers under design wins that lock in silicon for a given product cycle, with pricing negotiated per program. QCL signs bilateral licensing agreements with handset makers that pay a running royalty on each device sold, calculated against the wholesale phone price subject to a cap. Competitive position rests on modem leadership, integrated Snapdragon platforms, and the breadth of the standard-essential patent portfolio; MediaTek is the principal rival in mid-range mobile silicon, while Apple, Samsung, and increasingly Chinese fabless firms build modems internally. The overwhelming majority of revenue is booked outside the United States, with China the single largest geographic market by a wide margin.
