關於McDonald's
McDonald's Corporation operates and franchises quick-service restaurants under the McDonald's brand, serving hamburgers, chicken products, breakfast items, beverages, and desserts across more than one hundred countries. The business runs on two revenue streams: sales from company-operated restaurants, which generate large top-line figures but thin margins after food, paper, and crew costs; and revenues from franchised restaurants, consisting of rents, royalties tied to a percentage of sales, and initial fees. The overwhelming majority of the global system is franchised rather than company-owned. Franchised revenues, though smaller in absolute dollars than company-operated sales, contribute the dominant share of operating profit because they arrive with far lower associated costs and highly predictable cash flow.
Investors track same-store sales trends across the U.S., International Operated Markets, and International Developmental Licensed segments, since traffic and average check reveal whether pricing is outrunning volume. Commodity exposure to beef, chicken, wheat, dairy, and energy influences franchisee profitability and therefore the health of royalty streams. The company is a Dow Jones Industrial Average constituent with substantial index weight, has a long record of dividend increases and share repurchases, and carries meaningful long-term debt supported by real estate holdings. Regulatory attention spans labor standards, franchise-relationship law, nutrition disclosure, and antitrust scrutiny of joint-employer questions. Foreign exchange translation, developmental licensee execution, and refranchising pace are recurring structural questions.
Founded in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, the restaurant was transformed after Ray Kroc joined as franchising agent in 1955 and later acquired the company from the founders in 1961. The corporation went public in 1965 and expanded internationally through the following decades, opening in Canada, Japan, and Europe. It divested Chipotle Mexican Grill in 2006 and sold Boston Market earlier in the decade, refocusing on the core brand. A significant refranchising initiative in the mid-2010s shifted thousands of company-operated locations to franchisees. In 2017, McDonald's sold a controlling stake in its China and Hong Kong business to a consortium led by CITIC and Carlyle under a developmental license.
Customers are individual retail diners purchasing meals at drive-thrus, in-store counters, kiosks, and through delivery aggregators and the McDonald's mobile app, which anchors a large loyalty program. Franchisees, not end diners, are the direct commercial counterparties for most system revenue: they sign long-term agreements, typically twenty years, and pay rent on land and buildings that McDonald's often owns or leases, alongside royalties on gross sales. Competitive position rests on real estate locations, brand recognition, supply chain scale, standardized operations, and marketing spend funded through cooperative advertising contributions. Principal rivals include Yum Brands, Restaurant Brands International, Wendy's, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks in beverages. International Operated Markets, notably France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and Australia, contribute a substantial portion of consolidated revenue alongside the United States.
