關於American Express

American Express is a globally integrated payments company that operates a closed-loop card network, meaning it issues its own charge and credit cards, acquires the merchants that accept them, and processes the transactions in between. Revenue is dominated by discount fees charged to merchants each time a cardmember spends, supplemented by net interest income on revolving lending balances, annual card fees on premium products such as the Platinum and Gold franchises, and travel-related and other commissions. The business is organized around U.S. Consumer Services, Commercial Services covering small-business and corporate cards, and International Card Services, with a smaller Global Merchant and Network Services unit. Consumer spending on premium cards typically drives the bulk of profit.

Serious holders track credit performance across the loan and charge portfolio, since American Express both underwrites and funds a growing lending book alongside its traditional pay-in-full charge product. Cardmember acquisition costs, engagement with the Membership Rewards program, and retention of premium fee-paying customers are watched closely, as is merchant coverage relative to Visa and Mastercard. The company is a bank holding company supervised by the Federal Reserve, subject to stress testing and capital rules that shape buyback capacity. Regulatory scrutiny of interchange, the closed-loop model's discount rate, and consumer lending practices is a durable exposure. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway holds a long-standing concentrated stake, a governance feature investors monitor.

The company traces its origins to 1850 as an express freight business founded by Henry Wells, William Fargo, and John Butterfield in Buffalo, New York, later pioneering the money order in 1882 and the travelers cheque in 1891. It issued its first charge card in 1958, transforming into a payments franchise, and expanded through the twentieth century into brokerage, insurance, and banking under the Shearson, IDS, and Lehman Brothers umbrellas before divesting those businesses in the 1990s to refocus on cards and travel. American Express Financial Advisors was spun off as Ameriprise in 2005. The firm became a bank holding company during the 2008 financial crisis and is headquartered in New York.

Customers are individual consumers, small businesses, and large corporations who use American Express cards, alongside the merchants who accept them and pay a discount fee typically higher than competing networks in exchange for access to higher-spending cardmembers. Corporate travel and expense management contracts anchor the commercial franchise. Competitive position rests on the spend-centric model: premium cardmembers whose transaction volumes justify the merchant discount, reinforced by the Membership Rewards ecosystem, co-brand partnerships with carriers and hotels, and lounge infrastructure such as the Centurion network. Principal rivals are Visa and Mastercard in network scale, JPMorgan Chase and Citi in premium issuance, and Discover in closed-loop economics. The United States generates the majority of billed business, with meaningful presence in the United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico, and Australia.
