關於Abbott Laboratories
Abbott Laboratories is a diversified health-care company organized around four operating segments: Established Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices, Nutrition, and Diagnostics. Medical Devices spans cardiovascular products (stents, structural heart valves, electrophysiology catheters), neuromodulation, and — most visibly — the FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring franchise for people with diabetes. Nutrition sells adult brands (Ensure, Glucerna) and pediatric formulas (Similac, PediaSure). Diagnostics covers core laboratory instruments, molecular testing, point-of-care devices, and rapid tests. Established Pharmaceuticals distributes branded generics exclusively in emerging markets, since Abbott spun off its research-based drug operations. Medical Devices, led by the diabetes-care franchise and cardiovascular portfolio, typically drives the largest share of segment profit, with Nutrition contributing steady cash generation.
Investors track several structural features. FreeStyle Libre's trajectory dominates the growth story, so competitive dynamics against Dexcom in the continuous glucose monitoring market are watched closely, as is CGM reimbursement policy across major payers. The Nutrition segment carries recall and plant-remediation risk after the 2022 Sturgis, Michigan infant-formula shutdown, along with continuing litigation over premature-infant formula labeling. Regulatory exposure spans FDA device clearances, foreign pricing regimes, and product-liability tort dockets. Emerging-markets pharma exposes the company to currency swings and local pricing controls. Capital allocation is characteristic of a Dividend Aristocrat: consistent dividend growth, opportunistic bolt-on device acquisitions, and measured buybacks. Index weight in the S&P 500 health-care sector ensures broad passive ownership.
Founded in 1888 in Chicago by physician Wallace Calvin Abbott to manufacture dosimetric granules, the company went public in 1929 and expanded through the twentieth century into pharmaceuticals, hospital products, nutrition, and diagnostics. A defining moment came in January 2013, when Abbott spun off its research-based pharmaceuticals arm as AbbVie, leaving behind a diversified medical-products company. In 2017 Abbott completed two transformative deals: the roughly $25 billion acquisition of St. Jude Medical, which vaulted it into cardiovascular rhythm management and neuromodulation, and the acquisition of Alere, which built out its point-of-care diagnostics footprint. The company is incorporated in Illinois and headquartered in North Chicago, with operations in roughly 160 countries.
Customers vary sharply by segment. Medical Devices sells through hospitals, cardiology practices, and — for Libre — retail pharmacies and durable-medical-equipment channels reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurers. Diagnostics places instruments in hospital labs, reference laboratories, and physician offices, then earns recurring revenue on consumable reagents and assays, an installed-base model similar to Roche Diagnostics and Danaher's Beckman Coulter. Nutrition moves through grocery, mass, club, and pharmacy retail, plus WIC contracts in the United States. Established Pharmaceuticals relies on local sales forces across India, Russia, China, Latin America, and the Middle East. Competitive position rests on brand equity, clinical evidence, and scale manufacturing. International markets generate roughly two-thirds of consolidated sales.
