Progressiveについて

Progressive Corporation is one of the largest personal automobile insurers in the United States, underwriting private-passenger auto coverage alongside a growing property book that includes homeowners, renters, condo, and flood insurance. Its Personal Lines segment, sold both directly to consumers and through independent agents, generates the majority of premium and typically drives group profit. A Commercial Lines segment writes coverage for business autos, trucks, and specialty vehicles, where Progressive holds a leading share in for-hire transportation and small-fleet niches. The Property segment, built around the ASI acquisition, remains smaller and structurally less profitable than auto. Investment income on the float generated by unearned premiums and loss reserves supplements underwriting earnings and grows with the fixed-income portfolio.

Serious holders track the combined ratio, since the company operates under a longstanding target of writing at a 96 or better, and any drift signals pricing or loss-cost issues. Policies in force and rate-adequacy trends are watched alongside frequency and severity in bodily injury and physical damage, which move with used-vehicle prices, medical inflation, and driving behavior. Regulatory approval of rate filings by individual state insurance departments constrains how quickly the book can reprice. Investors also monitor capital allocation between the variable dividend, buybacks, and reinvestment, catastrophe exposure in the property book, reinsurance dependence, and the insurer financial strength ratings that underpin distribution relationships and agent placements.

Progressive was founded in 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Joseph Lewis and Jack Green as Progressive Mutual Insurance Company, focused on nonstandard auto risks that other carriers avoided. Under Peter B. Lewis, who led the company for decades beginning in the mid-1960s, it pioneered segmentation pricing, immediate claims response through vehicle-based adjusters, and comparison-rate disclosure. The corporation reorganized under an Ohio holding-company structure and became publicly traded, later expanding from nonstandard into standard and preferred auto. Its 2015 acquisition of ARX Holding, parent of American Strategic Insurance, established the property platform, subsequently taken to full ownership. The company operates through numerous underwriting subsidiaries and is headquartered in Mayfield Village, Ohio.

Customers are individual drivers, homeowners, and commercial vehicle operators who buy annual or six-month policies renewable at expiration, with premiums earned pro rata over the term. Distribution runs through two roughly comparable channels: a direct arm marketed under the Flo advertising franchise via web, phone, and mobile, and an independent-agency channel serving customers who prefer intermediated purchase. Competitive position rests on data-driven segmentation, telematics through the Snapshot program, claims-handling scale, and one of the largest advertising budgets in U.S. personal lines. Its principal rivals in auto are State Farm, GEICO, and Allstate, with USAA in the military segment. Operations are almost entirely domestic, with negligible international revenue.
