KLAについて

KLA Corporation designs and manufactures process control and yield management systems used by semiconductor makers to inspect wafers, reticles, and patterns during chip fabrication. Its core business is optical and electron-beam inspection and metrology equipment that detects defects and measures critical dimensions on wafers as they move through hundreds of process steps in a fab. Alongside these capital tools, KLA sells a substantial base of software, spare parts, and field service contracts tied to its installed base, which produces a steadier recurring stream. Adjacent lines include specialty semiconductor process equipment, printed circuit board and display inspection tools, and components. The wafer inspection franchise is generally understood to drive the bulk of segment profit.

Investors track KLA's exposure to a small group of leading-edge logic and memory customers, where a handful of foundries and integrated device makers account for a large share of tool orders. Customer concentration cuts both ways with the industry's cyclicality: capital spending at leading nodes swings sharply, and KLA's shipments follow. Export controls on advanced semiconductor equipment sold into China, and the pace at which those rules evolve, are a durable regulatory question. Also watched are the company's dominant share in optical wafer inspection and the durability of that moat, its consistent capital return through buybacks and a growing dividend, and its position within major semiconductor equipment indexes.

KLA traces its origins to the 1997 merger of KLA Instruments, founded in 1975 by Kenneth Levy and Robert Anderson, with Tencor Instruments, founded in 1976, forming KLA-Tencor. Both predecessor firms had grown up in Silicon Valley alongside the semiconductor industry, developing early automated inspection and film measurement tools. Through the 2000s and 2010s the company expanded organically and via acquisitions of specialty inspection and data analytics firms. A planned 2016 combination with Lam Research was abandoned under regulatory pressure. In 2019 KLA acquired Orbotech, adding printed circuit board and display inspection, and simultaneously simplified its name to KLA Corporation. It is headquartered in Milpitas, California.

Customers are the world's leading logic foundries, memory manufacturers, and integrated device makers, who purchase inspection and metrology systems as part of multi-year fab build-outs and node transitions. Individual tools carry high unit prices, sales cycles involve extensive qualification, and each installed system generates a long tail of service, upgrade, and software revenue that KLA books as its Service business. Competitive position rests on entrenched share in optical patterned wafer inspection, deep libraries of defect signatures accumulated over decades, and tight co-development relationships with customers at advanced nodes. Applied Materials and Hitachi High-Tech compete in adjacent metrology and e-beam segments. Revenue is heavily weighted to Asia, particularly Taiwan, Korea, and China.
