IBMについて

International Business Machines Corporation, known as IBM, is an enterprise technology company organized around software, consulting, and infrastructure, with a smaller financing arm. The software segment houses hybrid cloud platforms anchored by Red Hat, along with automation, data, security, and transaction processing products, and generally contributes the largest share of profit. Consulting delivers technology and business transformation services, systems integration, and application modernization for large enterprises and government agencies. Infrastructure covers IBM Z mainframes, Power servers, and storage, a business tied to multi-year hardware refresh cycles. A separate financing unit supports client purchases of IBM products. End markets skew toward regulated industries such as banking, insurance, telecommunications, healthcare, and the public sector.

Investors track the mix shift toward software and recurring revenue, since it drives margin expansion and valuation multiples relative to the consulting and hardware businesses. Mainframe cycle timing matters because IBM Z refreshes produce pronounced revenue swings in Infrastructure and pull related software and services. Backlog and book-to-bill in Consulting are watched as leading indicators. Capital allocation is centered on a long-standing dividend that management treats as a priority, share repurchases, and tuck-in software acquisitions. Governance features include a large independent board and executive compensation weighted to free cash flow. Currency exposure is meaningful given the international revenue base, and hyperscaler competition frames the durability of the hybrid cloud thesis.

IBM traces its origins to the 1911 merger that formed the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, renamed International Business Machines in 1924 under Thomas J. Watson Sr. The company defined mainframe computing with the System/360 in 1964 and later pioneered the personal computer in 1981. A near-collapse in the early 1990s led to a turnaround under Louis Gerstner that pivoted the company toward services and software. IBM divested its PC business to Lenovo in 2005 and its low-end server line in 2014. It acquired Red Hat in 2019 for roughly thirty-four billion dollars, and in 2021 spun off its managed infrastructure services unit as Kyndryl, sharpening focus on hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence.

Customers are predominantly large enterprises and government bodies that sign multi-year contracts, often bundling software subscriptions, consulting engagements, and hardware purchases through direct sales teams and a global partner ecosystem including systems integrators and independent software vendors. Software revenue increasingly comes from recurring subscription and support arrangements, while consulting is billed on time-and-materials or fixed-price project terms. Competitive position rests on deep entrenchment in mission-critical workloads, an open-source strategy through Red Hat, and vertical expertise in regulated industries. Principal rivals include Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Oracle, and SAP in software and cloud, and Accenture and Deloitte in consulting. Revenue is roughly split between the Americas and international markets.
