Dowについて
Dow Inc. is a materials science company that manufactures plastics, industrial intermediates, and coatings for customers across packaging, infrastructure, consumer, mobility, and electronics end markets. The business is organized around three reporting segments. Packaging & Specialty Plastics, built on polyethylene resins produced from ethylene the company crackers itself, is the largest segment by both revenue and earnings and typically drives the bulk of operating profit through the cycle. Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure sells propylene oxide, propylene glycol, polyurethanes, and chlor-alkali derivatives used in appliances, bedding, and construction. Performance Materials & Coatings houses silicones under the Dow Corning-derived franchise and architectural and industrial coatings resins, adding a less commoditized earnings stream alongside the two heavier chemistry segments.
Serious holders track the ethylene-to-polyethylene chain spread, since polyethylene margins depend on the gap between feedstock cost — largely U.S. natural gas liquids — and global resin prices set at the marginal Asian naphtha cracker. Feedstock advantage on the U.S. Gulf Coast and in Alberta is a structural pillar, as is exposure to Chinese demand and to European energy costs, where Dow has curtailed and rationalized capacity. Investors watch the company's Path2Zero net-zero ethylene and derivatives project in Alberta, its dividend policy and buyback pace against a commodity earnings stream, ESG and regulatory pressure on single-use plastics, litigation tails inherited from legacy DuPont chemistries, and its position in the S&P 500.
Dow's corporate lineage traces to The Dow Chemical Company, founded in Midland, Michigan in 1897 by Herbert H. Dow to extract bromine from brine. Over the twentieth century it expanded into a diversified chemicals major and in 2015 divested most of its chlorine business through a Reverse Morris Trust with Olin. Dow completed its all-stock merger of equals with E. I. du Pont de Nemours in 2017, forming DowDuPont, then executed a three-way separation in 2019 that spun off the current Dow Inc. as the materials science company, Corteva as the agriculture company, and a reconstituted DuPont holding specialty products. Dow Inc. is headquartered in Midland and its shares trade on the NYSE.
Dow sells primarily business-to-business to converters, compounders, formulators, brand owners, and industrial fabricators, with a comparatively small share of revenue coming from any single customer. Polyethylene and other commodity resins move on a mix of contract and spot terms indexed to feedstock and reference prices, while silicones and coatings resins carry more customization, longer qualification cycles, and stickier pricing. Competitive position rests on integrated feedstock access, scale of world-class crackers and derivative units, a global logistics footprint, and application development with customers. Principal peers include LyondellBasell, ExxonMobil Chemical, Chevron Phillips Chemical, INEOS, SABIC, Shin-Etsu, and Wacker. Roughly a plurality of sales comes from the Americas, with Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India, and Asia Pacific each contributing meaningful shares.
