After decades under various owners including Bunker Ramo and Allied Corporation, the modern company emerged through a 1987 leveraged buyout led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and returned to the public market with a listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 1991. Since then, Amphenol has been transformed by dozens of acquisitions that expanded its interconnect, sensor, antenna, and cable capabilities globally, and it operates today as a Delaware-incorporated holding company overseeing many operating units across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Mechanically, Amphenol sells overwhelmingly to other manufacturers and to electronic manufacturing services partners that build products for original equipment customers, rather than to end consumers, and relationships tend to run through long design-in cycles where a connector or sensor is specified into a platform and then supplied for the life of that program. Contracts are generally not long-term take-or-pay commitments; volume flows through purchase orders tied to underlying build rates. Competitive position rests on breadth of catalog, engineering support close to customers, manufacturing scale in low-cost regions, and the decentralized general-manager culture that keeps units nimble.
