About Verisk Analytics
Verisk Analytics is a data analytics and technology company serving the global insurance industry, providing predictive models, underwriting data, claims analytics, and catastrophe risk assessment tools to property and casualty insurers, reinsurers, and brokers. Its offerings span two principal areas: underwriting solutions, which supply rating, prefill, and policy issuance data that carriers embed into their pricing workflows, and claims solutions, which include anti-fraud analytics, subrogation, and repair estimation tools. Underwriting has long been the larger and more profitable of the two lines, anchored by proprietary loss-cost data submitted by carriers themselves through the ISO statistical agent function. Catastrophe modeling, delivered under the AIR Worldwide heritage brand, rounds out a portfolio geared almost entirely to insurance risk selection and pricing.
Investors track the durability of Verisk's data moat, which rests on a decades-old cooperative arrangement whereby member insurers contribute loss data in exchange for pooled analytics, a structure that would be difficult for a new entrant to replicate. Customer concentration is diffuse across the P&C carrier universe, but exposure to insurance industry cycles, M&A among carriers, and regulatory posture toward rating bureaus all matter. The company is a constituent of the S&P 500 and has historically returned capital aggressively through buybacks and a modest dividend. Governance considerations include the board's oversight of large divestitures, subscription renewal economics, and the sustainability of pricing power in a market with few substitutes but sophisticated buyers.
Verisk traces its roots to 1971, when it was founded as Insurance Services Office, a nonprofit rating and statistical agent for U.S. property and casualty insurers. It reorganized as a for-profit entity in the 1990s and completed its initial public offering on Nasdaq in 2009, listing under the ticker VRSK. During the 2010s it expanded aggressively through acquisitions, most notably Wood Mackenzie in energy analytics and AIR Worldwide in catastrophe modeling, while also building financial services and specialized industry verticals. Between 2022 and 2023 the company sharpened its focus by divesting Wood Mackenzie to Veritas Capital and exiting its financial services unit, leaving a pure-play insurance analytics enterprise headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The commercial model rests on multi-year subscription contracts with insurance carriers, under which clients pay recurring fees for access to data feeds, analytics platforms, and software modules integrated into underwriting and claims systems. Revenue is highly recurring and characterized by strong retention, reflecting the operational stickiness of embedded workflows and the cooperative data pool that only participating carriers can access. Competition varies by product line: LexisNexis Risk Solutions and TransUnion are meaningful rivals in underwriting data, while Guidewire, CoreLogic, and Moody's RMS compete in adjacent claims and catastrophe modeling niches. The United States generates the overwhelming majority of revenue, with the United Kingdom and other international markets contributing a small but growing share tied to global reinsurance and specialty lines.
