Snowflake Inc. operates a cloud-based data platform delivered as a fully managed service, running on top of the three major public clouds — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform — rather than on infrastructure the company itself owns. Its core product separates storage from compute, allowing customers to scale each independently and pay only for the compute time they consume. Revenue is dominated by consumption-based platform fees, with a small minority coming from professional services. End markets span financial services, healthcare, retail, media, and technology, and the company has extended the platform into data sharing, application development, and, more recently, workloads tied to machine learning and generative artificial intelligence.

Investors watch several structural features. Snowflake was founded in 2012 by Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes, and Marcin Zukowski, with the aim of rebuilding the data warehouse natively for the cloud. The service became generally available in 2015 under early chief executive Bob Muglia, who was succeeded in 2019 by Frank Slootman, previously of ServiceNow and Data Domain. The company went public in September 2020 in what was at the time the largest software initial public offering on record. Sridhar Ramaswamy, who joined through the 2023 acquisition of Neeva, became chief executive in early 2024. Snowflake remains an independent, Bozeman, Montana-headquartered public company and has grown largely organically, supplemented by targeted acquisitions in search, data science, and application tooling.

Customers range from mid-market firms to a large share of the Forbes Global 2000, and contracts are typically structured as capacity commitments in which the customer prepays for consumption credits used against storage, compute, and data transfer. Sales rely on a direct enterprise force complemented by a partner ecosystem of systems integrators and independent software vendors that build on the Data Cloud and its marketplace. Competitive position rests on workload portability across clouds, ease of data sharing between accounts, and separation of storage and compute, positioning it against Databricks, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, and Microsoft Fabric. The United States generates the majority of revenue, with Europe and Asia-Pacific accounting for the remainder.
