About Linde
Linde plc is the world's largest industrial gas company, producing and distributing atmospheric gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and argon alongside process gases including hydrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, and specialty gases used across manufacturing, healthcare, electronics, and energy end markets. Revenue is reported across three regional segments — Americas, EMEA, and APAC — plus a global Engineering business that designs and builds gas processing plants for internal projects and third-party customers. The gas segments together generate the overwhelming majority of profit, with Engineering contributing a much smaller share. End customers span chemicals, refining, steel, electronics fabs, food and beverage, and hospitals, giving the business exposure to both heavy industry and defensive healthcare demand.
Serious holders track the mix between on-site, merchant, and packaged gas contracts, since long-duration on-site take-or-pay agreements underpin much of the earnings stability and capital deployment cadence. Investors also watch project backlog and sale-of-plant activity in Engineering as a forward indicator, the pace of clean hydrogen and carbon capture commitments given the multi-year capex required, and pricing discipline in merchant markets where the industry operates as a rational oligopoly. Governance features include an Irish domicile with primary listing in New York, index membership in major U.S. benchmarks, and a long-standing policy of consistent dividend growth and steady buybacks. Energy cost pass-through mechanics and foreign currency translation are recurring analytical themes.
The modern Linde was formed through the 2018 all-stock merger of the historic German firm Linde AG, whose lineage traces to Carl von Linde's late-nineteenth-century work on air separation and refrigeration, with U.S.-based Praxair, which itself had been spun out of Union Carbide in 1992 and traced its own origins to the earliest commercial oxygen production in the United States. To satisfy antitrust regulators in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, both legacy companies divested significant assets, with Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso among the principal buyers. The combined entity is incorporated in Ireland, headquartered operationally in the United Kingdom, and in 2023 consolidated its primary listing on the New York Stock Exchange, delisting from Frankfurt.
Revenue is generated primarily through three contracting models: on-site plants built adjacent to a single large customer under long-term take-or-pay agreements with fixed facility fees and pass-throughs for power and feedstock; merchant liquid deliveries by cryogenic tanker to mid-sized industrial and healthcare customers under multi-year supply contracts; and packaged gas cylinders and hardgoods sold through a dense distribution network. Competitive position rests on density of production and distribution assets, the switching costs embedded in pipeline and on-site infrastructure, and engineering capability to build complex plants in-house. The main global rivals are Air Liquide and Air Products, with Nippon Sanso and Messer holding meaningful regional positions; the Americas and EMEA regions each contribute a large portion of sales, with APAC a smaller but strategically important share.
