About Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson operates as a diversified healthcare company organized around two reporting segments after the separation of its consumer health business. Innovative Medicine, formerly branded Janssen, develops and markets prescription pharmaceuticals across immunology, oncology, neuroscience, pulmonary hypertension, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and infectious disease, with anchor franchises in autoimmune biologics and multiple myeloma. MedTech sells surgical instruments, orthopaedics, interventional cardiology and electrophysiology devices, and vision care products to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and physicians. Innovative Medicine typically generates the bulk of operating profit given pharmaceutical margins, while MedTech contributes a substantial and growing share of revenue. End markets are almost entirely clinical rather than consumer facing since the 2023 separation.

Serious holders track patent cliffs on high-revenue biologics, the pace of biosimilar erosion, and the depth of the pipeline meant to replace maturing drugs. Regulatory exposure spans FDA approvals, EMA and PMDA decisions, Medicare drug price negotiation under the Inflation Reduction Act, and 340B program dynamics. Ongoing talc-related product liability litigation and the associated settlement strategy remain a durable governance and balance-sheet question. Capital allocation is anchored by an uninterrupted multi-decade record of annual dividend increases, complemented by share repurchases and bolt-on acquisitions. The company is a Dow Jones Industrial Average constituent, carries an AAA credit rating, and maintains a unified board structure with a combined chair and chief executive.

The firm traces to 1886, when Robert Wood Johnson founded a sterile surgical dressings business in New Brunswick, New Jersey, alongside his brothers James and Edward. It incorporated in 1887 and listed publicly in 1944. Twentieth-century expansion added baby care, wound care, and, through a long sequence of acquisitions, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, notably the 1961 purchase of Belgium's Janssen Pharmaceutica. Later transactions included Cordis, DePuy, Pfizer Consumer Health, Alios, Actelion, and, in 2017, the Swiss group whose vision assets extended the eye-care franchise. The 2023 spin-off of Kenvue, encompassing Tylenol, Band-Aid, Neutrogena, and Listerine, refocused the parent on prescription drugs and medical technology.

Innovative Medicine revenue flows through wholesalers, specialty pharmacies, and hospital systems, with realized prices shaped by rebates negotiated with pharmacy benefit managers, managed care plans, and government payers including Medicare, Medicaid, and ex-U.S. national health systems. Competitive position rests on patent-protected biologics, manufacturing complexity of large molecules, and a global development organization capable of running multi-indication registrational programs. MedTech sells largely through hospital purchasing groups and direct sales representatives who support surgeons in the operating room, where switching costs and clinician training reinforce share. Principal competitors include Pfizer, Merck, AbbVie, Roche, and Bristol-Myers Squibb in drugs and Medtronic, Stryker, Abbott, Boston Scientific, and Intuitive Surgical in devices. Roughly half of revenue is generated outside the United States.
