About Intuitive Surgical

Intuitive Surgical designs, manufactures, and markets robotic-assisted surgical systems, best known for the da Vinci platform used across urology, gynecology, general surgery, thoracic, and cardiac procedures, and the Ion platform for minimally invasive lung biopsy. Revenue comes from three linked streams: capital sales of the systems themselves, recurring sales of instruments and accessories consumed with each procedure, and service contracts on the installed base. The instruments-and-accessories line, tied directly to worldwide procedure volume, is the largest contributor and the principal driver of profit. System placements matter less for near-term earnings than for expanding the installed base that generates consumable pull-through for years afterward.

Investors track worldwide procedure growth, the pace of new system placements versus trade-ins to the newer da Vinci 5, and the mix between outright purchases, leases, and usage-based arrangements, which shifts revenue timing. Regulatory exposure spans FDA clearances for new indications and instruments, overseas approvals particularly in China and Japan, and evolving reimbursement in each market. Competitive entry from Medtronic's Hugo, Johnson & Johnson's Ottava, CMR Surgical, and regional Chinese platforms is a durable question, as are hospital capital budgets, tariff and supply exposure on components, and the company's cash-rich balance sheet with no dividend and only episodic buybacks.

The company was founded in 1995 in Sunnyvale, California, drawing on robotic surgery research originally developed at SRI International with U.S. military funding. It went public in 2000 and secured FDA clearance for the first da Vinci system that year. A 2003 combination with rival Computer Motion, maker of the Zeus system, consolidated the emerging field and resolved overlapping patent disputes. Successive generations followed, including the da Vinci S, Si, Xi, X, SP for single-port procedures, and the fifth-generation da Vinci 5 introduced in 2024, alongside the Ion endoluminal system for lung biopsy. Intuitive remains an independent, Sunnyvale-headquartered company with regional joint ventures, notably Intuitive Fosun in China.

Customers are hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, which either purchase systems outright, lease them, or contract under operating-lease structures that bundle usage. Once installed, each procedure consumes EndoWrist instruments that carry defined use limits before replacement, producing predictable per-procedure economics that compound with the installed base. Competitive position rests on that installed base, accumulated surgeon training hours, breadth of cleared indications, and an extensive patent and manufacturing footprint that competitors are still working to match. The United States accounts for the majority of revenue, with Europe and Asia forming the balance; Japan and China are the most closely watched international markets given their scale, distinct reimbursement regimes, and local competition.
