About Chubb
Chubb Ltd is one of the world's largest publicly traded property and casualty insurers, underwriting commercial and personal lines of insurance as well as accident and health coverage, reinsurance, and life insurance. Its commercial P&C business — spanning property, casualty, marine, aviation, environmental, financial lines, and specialty coverages for corporations of all sizes — generates the bulk of premiums, complemented by a high-net-worth personal lines franchise that insures affluent households through its Chubb Personal Risk Services unit. Accident and health insurance, distributed largely through direct marketing and worksite channels in Asia and Latin America, forms a distinct third leg. Underwriting income from commercial P&C typically drives profit, though investment income on the float has become increasingly material.
Investors watch the combined ratio and its split between loss and expense components, since underwriting discipline through soft markets is central to the Chubb identity. Catastrophe exposure — hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, and secondary perils — sits alongside long-tail casualty reserving as the twin structural risks, with reserve development scrutinized each period. Regulatory oversight spans dozens of jurisdictions, and the group's Swiss and Bermudian domiciles carry their own capital regimes. Capital allocation leans toward buybacks and a long-running dividend, funded by underwriting cash flow. Governance features include a long-tenured chief executive whose imprint on culture is unusually pronounced, and index membership in the S&P 500 anchors passive ownership.
The modern Chubb was formed in 2016 when ACE Limited acquired the historical Chubb Corporation of New Jersey — founded in 1882 by Thomas Caldwell Chubb as a marine underwriter — and adopted the Chubb name. ACE itself had grown out of a 1985 mutual formed by thirty-four Fortune 500 companies to address a directors and officers liability crisis, later reorganizing under a Cayman and then Swiss parent and acquiring CIGNA's P&C operations in 1999. Subsequent bolt-ons expanded the Asian consumer and specialty footprint, including the 2022 purchase of Cigna's accident and health and life business across seven Asian markets. The parent is domiciled in Zurich with principal offices in New York and Warren, New Jersey.
Chubb sells primarily through independent retail brokers and wholesale intermediaries for its commercial and high-net-worth personal lines, and through direct-response and worksite channels for consumer accident and health coverage in emerging markets. Contracts are annual insurance policies whose premiums are earned over the coverage period, with claims paid from reserves and investment income earned on the float that accumulates between premium receipt and loss payment. Competitive position rests on underwriting expertise in complex commercial risks, breadth of product, financial strength ratings, and claims service reputation, positioning it against AIG, Travelers, Zurich, Allianz, and specialty peers. North America generates the majority of premiums, with meaningful and growing contributions from Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
