LG Display (034220.KS) Q1 2026: Profit 4× but ₩576B Net Loss Bites

OLED mix improvement pushes operating profit to ₩146.7 billion — 4.4 times the year-ago figure — while ₩13.74 trillion in borrowings, 74% variable-rate, channels over ₩529 billion in quarterly finance costs directly onto the net loss line

LG Display returned to full-year operating profitability in FY2025 and carried that momentum into Q1 2026, where operating profit reached ₩146.7 billion — 4.4 times the ₩33.5 billion recorded in the year-earlier quarter, at an operating margin of 2.7% against 2.0% for the full prior year. Yet the net loss widened to ₩575.7 billion from ₩237.0 billion in Q1 2025, an outcome that has almost nothing to do with the display business itself. OLED mix improvements pushed average selling price per unit area to $1,244, roughly 60% above the 2024 cycle trough of $779, while ₩13.74 trillion in total borrowings generated ₩529.6 billion in quarterly finance costs, absorbing more than three times the operating profit produced. Display is a structurally cyclical business where utilization and panel pricing produce sharp earnings swings; reading Q1 2026 in isolation would misrepresent a company that has demonstrably improved its product economics but remains constrained by a debt stack accumulated through earlier downturn cycles.
