Hanwha (000880.KS) Q1 2026: Net Profit Surges 76% as Shipbuilding Leads, Defense Retreats

Hanwha Ocean's double-digit operating margins and a chemicals turnaround powered the group's sharpest quarterly profit jump in years, while the flagship defense segment absorbed a steep currency-driven earnings hit.

Hanwha Corporation posted consolidated net profit of ₩775.8 billion in Q1 2026, a 76% jump from ₩439.8 billion a year earlier — a result that would look unremarkable from the outside were it not for the fact that the group's most storied division drove it in the wrong direction. Revenue climbed 28.9% to ₩21.45 trillion, yet operating profit grew at only 21.5%, and the explosives-and-defense segment that has historically anchored Hanwha's earnings delivered a 14.6% operating profit contraction and a 40% net income decline. The actual profit engine in Q1 was threefold: Hanwha Ocean's shipbuilding margins crossed into double digits as high-contract-price orders reached delivery, the chemicals segment swung from a ₩106.0 billion operating loss to a ₩27.9 billion profit, and a ₩249.7 billion reduction in consolidated elimination losses amplified the bottom line. As an operating holding company directly engaged in explosives, defense, machinery, trading, and construction while consolidating Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Solutions, Hanwha Life Insurance, and Hanwha General Insurance, Hanwha presents financial statements where industrial manufacturing cycles and insurance balance sheet accounting coexist on a single ledger — which means the headline figures require careful segment decomposition before any conclusions about underlying performance can be drawn.
