關於Workday

Workday, Inc. is an enterprise software company that sells cloud-based applications for managing people and money inside large organizations. Its two flagship product families are Human Capital Management, which handles core HR, payroll, talent, workforce planning and learning, and Financial Management, which handles general ledger, procurement, expenses, planning and analytics. The company generates the overwhelming majority of revenue from subscription contracts to these applications, with a smaller stream from professional services tied to implementation. End customers are predominantly large and mid-sized enterprises, universities, hospital systems and government agencies. Subscription revenue is where operating leverage and profit are generated; the professional services line is typically run near break-even and exists to support deployments.

Investors track the durability of net revenue retention among an installed base heavily concentrated in large enterprise accounts, since a single Fortune 500 client can represent a multi-year backlog worth many millions. Contract duration and remaining performance obligations are watched as leading indicators of subscription growth. Governance features that draw attention include the dual-class share structure that concentrates voting power with the co-founders, and the composition of the board. Capital allocation historically emphasized reinvestment and stock-based compensation over dividends, with share repurchase activity a more recent addition. Structural questions include competitive pressure from larger suites, exposure to enterprise IT budgets, and the pace at which artificial intelligence features are embedded without eroding pricing.

Workday was founded in 2005 by David Duffield and Aneel Bhusari, both formerly of PeopleSoft, shortly after that company's hostile acquisition by Oracle. The founders built Workday from inception as a multi-tenant cloud application, distinguishing it from on-premise enterprise resource planning incumbents. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in October 2012. Growth into finance software was accelerated by the 2016 acquisition of Adaptive Insights' predecessor lineage and later the direct purchase of Adaptive Insights in 2018 for planning capabilities. Additional acquisitions expanded procurement, analytics and machine-learning talent, including Scout RFP and Peakon. The corporate structure remains a single operating segment headquartered in Pleasanton, California, with the co-founders retaining outsized voting influence through Class B shares.

Mechanically, Workday sells multi-year subscription contracts, typically three years in length, priced primarily on employee headcount for HCM and on transaction or user metrics for Financials. Sales are handled by a direct enterprise sales force organized by industry vertical, supplemented by a partner ecosystem of systems integrators such as Accenture, Deloitte and Kainos that perform most implementations. Competitive position rests on the unified cloud data model, the frequency of feature releases delivered to all tenants simultaneously, and switching costs embedded once payroll and general ledger are live. Its principal rivals are Oracle Fusion Cloud, SAP SuccessFactors and S/4HANA, and ADP in payroll. The United States generates the bulk of revenue, with the remainder from EMEA and Asia-Pacific.
