關於Waste Management

Waste Management, Inc. is the largest integrated environmental solutions provider in North America, operating a vertically linked network of collection routes, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, and landfills. Its core business is the collection of solid waste from residential, commercial, and industrial customers, which is then routed through transfer stations to landfills the company itself owns. Disposal at those landfills, along with third-party volumes accepted at the same sites, is what typically drives the bulk of operating profit. Adjacent lines include recycling of paper, metals, plastics, and glass, and a growing renewable natural gas business that captures methane from landfills and sells it as vehicle fuel and pipeline gas.

Investors watch the durability of pricing in the collection business, where long-tenured contracts with municipalities and commercial customers allow annual escalators tied to indices or negotiated rates. Landfill airspace is a finite, permitted asset, and the pace at which the company consumes and replaces it is a structural question, as is regulatory exposure under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act rules on landfill gas, and state-level PFAS liability. Capital allocation leans heavily on sustaining capex for trucks and cells, plus recurring dividends and buybacks. Governance is conventional for a large-cap industrial, and the acquisition of Stericycle materially expanded medical waste and secure information destruction exposure.

The company traces its modern form to Wayne Huizenga, Dean Buntrock, and Larry Beck, who consolidated small hauling operations beginning in 1968 and took Waste Management public in 1971. Through the 1970s and 1980s it grew by hundreds of acquisitions, at one point diversifying into international operations, chemical waste, and environmental services under a holding structure known as WMX Technologies. A late-1990s accounting scandal preceded a 1998 merger with USA Waste Services of Houston, which retained the Waste Management name but installed new management and moved the headquarters to Texas. The company later divested non-core units and, in 2020 and 2024, absorbed Advanced Disposal Services and Stericycle respectively.

Revenue comes primarily from recurring service contracts: residential collection under municipal franchises, commercial front-load service under multi-year agreements with businesses, and industrial roll-off containers billed per haul. Landfill and transfer station revenue is generated by tipping fees charged per ton, from both the company's own trucks and third-party haulers. Recycling revenue moves with commodity prices for old corrugated containers and metals, while the renewable energy segment sells gas and environmental credits. Competitive position rests on the density of collection routes feeding company-owned disposal sites, a moat difficult to replicate given landfill permitting constraints. Its principal rivals are Republic Services and, in secondary markets, GFL Environmental and Casella. Operations are concentrated in the United States, with a smaller Canadian footprint.
