The company in its current form was created in April 2020 through the merger of United Technologies Corporation's aerospace businesses with Raytheon Company, initially named Raytheon Technologies and rebranded RTX in 2023. United Technologies itself traced to a 1934 reorganization of United Aircraft and Transport, and had built its aerospace franchise around Pratt & Whitney and, through the 2018 Rockwell Collins acquisition, an expanded Collins Aerospace. As part of the merger transaction, United Technologies spun off Carrier and Otis as independent public companies. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, RTX now operates as three reporting segments after simplifying an earlier four-segment structure that had separately housed Raytheon Intelligence & Space and Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

Revenue comes through two mechanically distinct channels. Defense sales run largely on multi-year U.S. and allied government contracts, a mix of cost-plus development work and fixed-price production, funded through congressional appropriations and foreign military sales cases coordinated with the State Department. Commercial aerospace revenue comes from selling engines and systems to Boeing, Airbus, and other airframers, then earning higher-margin aftermarket revenue over decades through spare parts, maintenance, and long-term service agreements tied to the installed fleet. Competitive position rests on certified technology, installed base, and program incumbency against rivals including GE Aerospace, Safran, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. International customers contribute a meaningful minority of sales, concentrated in NATO members and Gulf and Indo-Pacific allies.
