關於DoorDash
DoorDash, Inc. operates the largest on-demand local commerce platform in the United States, connecting consumers with merchants through a network of independent contractor couriers known as Dashers. Its core business is restaurant food delivery through the DoorDash and Caviar consumer apps, but the platform has extended into grocery, convenience, retail, alcohol, and flowers, and it operates internationally under the Wolt brand across Europe and select other markets. Revenue is generated primarily through commissions charged to merchants on each order, consumer delivery and service fees, subscription fees from its DashPass membership program, and a growing advertising business sold to merchants and consumer packaged goods brands. The U.S. restaurant marketplace drives the bulk of platform profit.
Serious holders track a distinctive set of structural questions. Regulatory exposure looms largest: the classification of Dashers as independent contractors rather than employees remains contested in jurisdictions including California, Massachusetts, New York City, Seattle, and parts of Europe, with each ruling capable of reshaping unit economics. Investors also watch category mix as the company pushes beyond restaurants into lower-frequency, higher-basket verticals, and monitor take-rate discipline against merchant pushback. Governance features include a multi-class share structure that concentrates voting power with the founders. Capital allocation has centered on reinvestment, tuck-in acquisitions, and share repurchases rather than dividends. Consumer discretionary sensitivity and the durability of DashPass retention are recurring themes.
DoorDash was founded in 2013 in Palo Alto by Stanford students Tony Xu, Andy Fang, Stanley Tang, and Evan Moore, initially as Palo Alto Delivery. The company scaled through the venture-funded delivery wars of the late 2010s, overtaking earlier leaders to become the largest U.S. restaurant delivery platform by share. It acquired Square's Caviar business in 2019, listed on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2020 in one of that year's largest technology IPOs, and in 2022 completed its acquisition of Helsinki-based Wolt, giving it a European and Asian footprint. Subsequent additions have included the drinks-focused platform Bbot and, in 2025, the U.K.-listed hospitality technology group Deliveroo, extending its international marketplace reach.
Mechanically, the platform earns a commission on each merchant order, typically a percentage of order value, alongside consumer-paid delivery, service, and small-order fees; Dashers are paid per delivery with tips passed through in full. DashPass subscribers pay a monthly or annual fee for reduced fees on eligible orders, and merchants purchase sponsored listings and promoted placements through a self-serve advertising product. Enterprise partnerships with large chains and white-label logistics services under DoorDash Drive add a business-to-business layer. Competitive position rests on marketplace density, courier availability, and selection breadth, where DoorDash holds a leading U.S. share against Uber Eats and Grubhub, while Wolt competes with Uber, Just Eat Takeaway, and Delivery Hero abroad. The United States remains the dominant geographic contributor.
